Clinton Should Focus on Others, Not Himself
Virginian Pilot ^ | 12-31-01 | Editorial Staff

Pity poor Bill Clinton. While the rest of the country is worried about the war on terrorism, he's agonizing over -- surprise! -- his own legacy.

Seems that Clinton gathered a bunch of former aides and Cabinet secretaries to his New York office last week out of concern that his accomplishments as president have slipped from memory. They agreed to organize a corps of supporters to talk up his achievements and keep his profile from disappearing.

``We have to remind people of what we did on the economy, what we did with the crime bill, what we did with terrorism,'' one Clinton adviser told the New York Times. ``They're trying to pin the bin Laden thing on us.''

It's not unreasonable to muster one pang of sympathy -- just one -- for the ex-president. Even in the best of Clinton days (before the Lewinsky escapade), his strengths -- such as balancing the budget to help point the economy upward -- went unrecognized by his frothing opponents.

But Clinton's time as president is over. His latest scheme showcases perhaps Clinton's fatal flaw -- his boundless, blinding love of himself.

Better he should take a cue from the last Southern Democratic president, Jimmy Carter. In the two decades since he left office, Carter established a foundation in Atlanta promoting peace and democracy worldwide. If he isn't building houses for Habitat for Humanity, he's monitoring elections in Guyana or Indonesia.

Clinton could do the same, devoting himself to one of the issues he embraced during his presidency -- perhaps racial reconciliation or national service. Aside from improving the world, Carter's post-presidential service has transformed his image from failed president to wise elder statesman. If Clinton looked beyond himself for a change, he might be able to do the same.

True, and he was a big boy in high school, but played in the band and not football.

In fact played no sports in any school.

Personally, I think the Clinton legacy is getting plenty of attention -- after all, we're spending approximately $1 billion a day attending to it in Afghanistan.

I agree with you and that's the legacy he's trying desperately to remake before all the facts come out.

The leftist media had to dig very deep, to find something good about bill clinton, and give him credit not due. Clinton was respnosible for the good economy in the 90s as much as a farmer is responsible for the rain he gets.

This may be one area where the media and sheeple will never get a clue. Personal experience is that people looked at their portfolios, saw that they were doing well, said, "hmmm, clinton is president" and concluded that clinton as prez = a good economy. The clintons claiming responsibility for the great economy in the 90's is their regular mantra; remember Hitlery saying just the other day that America was richer because of bubba? (gag me!)

I would gladly give bubba credit for the 90's economy AFTER he is indicted and imprisoned for his crimes.

We all remember Governor Clinton for constructing the Erie Canal and for other economically far-ranging contributions. Now as to this more recent Clinton, the fat and perverted fellow, well, who would want to remember him or his broad-beamed wifie? Or that kinkie haired kid?

Great editorial - too bad they didn't see him for what he was in 92!

They still don't see him for what he is. Hell, they STILL think Jimmah was a good president! Nope, the only reason they made this mild rebuke is because Norfolk is a Navy town, and there is a semi-war going on. They have to at least pretend to be patriotic to keep from losing subscribers.

BTW,I was living in that area when the debate about the so-called "Assault Weapons Ban" was going on. Some friends and I tried to rent ad space in the Virginian-Pilot to show the lies being told, and the Virginian-Pilot refused to rent us the space.

we can hardly blame Clinton for defending himself against the frequent, false and vicious attacks about him, his family, and his administrtation.

It's people like you who give drug abuse such a bad name. The ONLY "false and viscious" statements I ever heard about the Bubba bin Bombing administration is that they accomplished anything good. My fondest desire is to live long enough to urinate on his grave.

How about what Clinton did on the Oval Office carpet? Or in the White House sink?

Why the HELL are you and others still babbling about his sex life? The man comitted TREASON,and all you want to focus on is a lousy blowjob? Gimme a bleeping break!

All of this was debated ad nauseum during the impeachment debate and he was found guilty of getting blow jobs beyond a reasonable doubt. My point is that it is time to move on to other things.

Absolutely. Clinton advised us long ago to move on for the good of the country. Afterall, the whole BJ episode, impeachment, and every other Clinton indiscrection was fabricated by the vast right-wing conspiracy.

He should defend himself against those of us who have no life beyond dwelling on Clinton. Maybe Bill, Hill, Al, and Jesse should embark on a national campaign to remind America about what a great president he was. I can't think of a better way to kickoff the 2002 congressional races. Maybe they could host a musical event for the NYC police and fireman.

Dole was and is a loser, and the RNC has seen fit to try and inflict his wife on the people of NC as a US Senator. I am personally planning on voting for ANYBODY who runs against Giddy Dole, regardless of who they are. It will be the first time in my life I ever cast a vote for a Dim,but so be it. If I'm going to have a Dim Senator regardless of who wins ,I want a real one.

BTW,don't try to shovel that HorseHillary at me that "it's all about numbers! We NEED Giddy Dole so she can vote with us!" Giddy would vote AGAINST us more than she would with us,and further weaken the alleged Republican party more as a alleged Republican than a factual Dim Senator would.

Never mind a "third party". What we REALLY need is a "second party"!

Clinton Should Focus on Others, Not Himself

Clinton is not capable of such a task, In "Bill Clintons World" there is only three people he has ever cared about in his entire life! and that is....."Me, Myself and I"

The only one that matters to Republicans. He WON TWO ELECTIONS.

I don't see why the RNC would be upset over this. Bubba bin Bombing mostly won both elections by default. And de fault for that mostly lies within the RNC for not running a candidate worth a damn. You have a hard time convincing me they were even interested in winning when you consider they ran Bubba Bush-1 against him the first time, and Bob (I STILL think "DOLE! is what Homer Simpson says when he smacks his forhead) Dole the second time. Of course, the DNC paying Perot to run was the REAL "kicker" that made it all possible.

th be told that is the real reason he is so hated.

He's hated because he would have to evolve to reach the same level of societal value as a cold sore. He IS "crotch rot" in semi-human form.

And my dog should stop sniffing other dog's rear ends.

Let's face it. There are some things that will never change.

I'll give Carter credit for being a nice guy. Naive as h#ll, but still a nice guy.

"Wise"? Only if Madonna is a virgin.

You make a good point, however, their form of patriotism is tons and tons of articles about the Navy. It is truly rare to see much critical of anyone on the left, especially clinton.

BTW,I was living in that area when the debate about the so-called "Assault Weapons Ban" was going on. Some friends and I tried to rent ad space in the Virginian-Pilot to show the lies being told, and the Virginian-Pilot refused to rent us the space.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I don't remember all the details but someone tried to rebut an opinion about abortion via letters to the editor. The VP said it was too long. So the person rented ad space BUT the VP put all kinds of disclaimers with the letter-ad.

Giddy Dole is as big a threat to the 2nd Amendment as the Brady Bunch. Just another RINO.

Never mind a "third party". What we REALLY need is a "second party"!

Ain't it the truth?

I'm hoping Jimmy and Billy will be going to Zimbawie to monitor the coming election.

I'm sure they would be a big help.
