The largest bomb ever lit by the US (at Bikini) was 15-16 megatons which was about twice as big as they expected due to the unexpected interaction of the lithium in the fusion process. That must have been a real pucker-factor increaser, can you even imagine?

However, the USSR tested one with a design yield of 100-150 megatons, damped down to 50 for the test in a rare display of common sense for the Soviets.

My wife and I both carry a 3 day survival kit of food, water, first aid kit, flashlight, basic tools, a change of clothes etc. in the trunk of each car (in case we have to evacuate seperately). We have agreed to a meeting place (her mom's, small town, South Texas) and have charted and driven a route there that doesn't involve using the highways. Our home is also well stocked. I have done all I feel can do to protect us in case of secondary fall-out drifting over Houston. And, because I have done all I feel I can do.....not going to worry about it anymore.

I don't disagree with you about being prepaired, Just that the India - Pakistan thing is not going to effect us from a sandpoint of nuke risk. IMHO, if India could take out Pakistan, that would save us the trouble.

The terrorists were NOT Pakistani backed. Not even India is claiming this. Pakistan stopped backing Kashmiri terrorists quite some time ago. If you have any evidence that Pakistan was backing these terrorists, please provide it and include your sources.

It is true that the terrorists were operating from within Pakistan, but that is quite a different thing from Pakistan sponsoring them. Pakistan has already made 50+ arrests and frozen the accounts of the leader of the organization suspected to be responsible.

That was my whole point too. Pakistan just arrested 50+ terrorists but it never happened 3 months ago. Back then 50,000 militants in Pakistan were burning U.S. flags and holding up poster signs of Bin Ladin. But today, Pakistan is beging to arrest terrorists and hopefully take care of the problem. I think the treat of an all out war with India, possibly nuclear, has helped change public opinion in Pakistan about wiping out terrorism.

Let's see... The Ranger series' largest shot was 22kt on Feb 6, 1951, the Buster Easy was 31kt on November 5, 1951, Upshot-Knothole Simon was 43kt on April 25, 1953, Upshot-Knothole Climax was 61kt on June 4, 1953, ah, but here's the largest ever -- I knew I'd find it by flipping through the list:

Hood was the largest atmospheric test ever conducted at NTS (and in continental U.S.). This was a test of a two-stage thermonuclear device designed by UCRL (University of California Radiation Laboratory), even though the U.S. government stated at the time that no thermonuclear tests were being conducted in Nevada. The design was intended to fill a gap in 300-400 lb. thermonuclear warhead technology, and was tested at reduced yield. The predicted yield was 60-80 kt. The device used a boosted Swan primary (which gave yields of 12-19 kt in other tests during Plumbbob). About 7 kt of the overall yield was from fusion. The device was a small diameter system (12.1 inches) and was 42.2 inches long. Total device weight was 393 lb. The test also included troop maneuvers by 2500 Marines, and air operations by 124 aircraft.

I am glad you are prepared. Unfortunately in NJ you would be regarded as borderline survival nut. I keep about one week of emergency supply for my family based on past state emergencies such as one year we had 11 major snow storms, which atleast 3 were declared emergencies as well as two severe floods caused by Noreaster weather conditions. The worst one actually closed the state roads for 72 hours, and it took the state/FEMA to restablish normal conditions in about a week. I was the few in my community that had food and water. After 9/11 I figure more would be prepared, but unfortunately I am still the lonely voice in the wilderness. Maybe I should move to Texas.
