What the Papers Say-The London Times Monday December 31, 2001 00:03 GMT

WE'LL SURVIVE NUCLEAR WAR, SAYS INDIA

India boasted yesterday that it would survive a first strike by a Pakistani atomic weapon, but its neighbour would be wiped out in a swift nuclear counter attack.

Oh well, well just have to go biblical and kill every last man woman and child in China. We'll suffer greatly and the world's economy will collapse but China won't accept it's status as second fiddle.

If a nuke fight comes out, india will not be able to reach any significant chinese target, even Lahsa is too far away, while China can wipe out 300 indian cities in a few minutes. Nuclear war is not a viable option for India.

Much depends on whatever may be the US response. My hunch is the USA would be with India. A fine means to clean up the Middle East & thin out the Middle 'Chi-Com' Kingdom all in one go.

Hoo-haa, let's roll ....

I thought Pakistan said that they agreed not to use them, is this India's way of saving face?

Pakistan said they would not use them unless they were backed into a corner, in other words if they were losing the war. India said they would not use them first. There is a big difference between the two positions.

Tis the education. The Chinese Empire was the most powerful and largest in the world for centuries. At one time China was half the planet. This country wants to reclaim her rightful position as the dominant global power. And now I don't really know if they deserve it or not.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that the ChiComs stole the Russian technology.

I think Pakistan has gun-type uranium bombs whereas India has at least pancake booster bombs, the gun type bombs are pretty likely to work, where the booster bombs might work, might not... so the calculations of who might win get trickier...I really hope that they back down. This talk of "surviving" is very dangerous. We "survived" 40 years of cold war because we didn't think we could win, and really, neither did Russia.

Islamics have not been "trying" to take over India for hundreds of years - they already have a history of actually ruling India for several hundred years.

It is a wonder that there are any Hindus and Buddhists left.

A nuclear bomb is not as bad as some on the list might think. I am not saying it is a good thing, we would all rather not have it happen, but how many know that we have suffered and survived fallout from foreign nuclear blasts already? http://www.oism.org/nwss/s73p929.htm This was as "dirty" as the chernobyl disaster, only a bit more spread out :). Most of America was covered in a fallout cloud! Full text here, for those who want to learn more about the facts of nuclear war survival. It is really an excellent read. http://www.oism.org/nwss/

It's all in the war aims. From what I've seen coming out of New Dehli, they want the Pakistani government and won't be satisfied with anything less. When (not if) they lose the initial battles, the pressure will be extremely high on their government/military to use nukes to turn the tide (though in reality, they probaly have enough space to trade for enough time to get a military that knows how to fight).

Even if India is successful in toppling the Pakistani regime, what's there to replace it but some group with a REAL blood-lust that won't be satisfied until they're dead, so even if the war doesn't go nuclear before India manages to make any serious inroads into Pakistan, it will once they do.

I saw an article last week where the Poles stopped a shipment of radioactive mushrooms comming in from Belarus. Chernobyl messed up some of the most productive farm land in that area. I agree that nuclear war is survivable but the costs are tremendous. Thankfully India and Pakistan have a couple dozen warheads between the two and aren't armed to the teeth like the US and SU.
