Mr. Kux said geography also favored India because an armoured blitz across the arid Punjab province toward the Afghan border could cut off Islamabad, the capital, from Sindh, the country's economic powerhouse, and its main port of Karachi.

I believe India tried to do exactly this in 1971. It either failed, or was aborted.. do you know?

I'm not quite sure how India launched their military attack in '71.

I thought India withdrew after the lesson was taught. Kind of like why we didn't take Baghdad in the Gulf war.

Also, there was an east pakistan (now Bangladesh) in '71. They won their independance. This weakened Pakistan considerably.

China should be expected to jump into the fray if India is winning. It has had an ongoing border dispute with India, also.
