Strange, this article ended up in both "Breaking News" (where I didn't post it) and Front Page News.

Excellant post. Impressive plane.
One day I was fishing on the Mississippi along the bluffs.
Four B-52's came over the bluffs flying low, right over me.
Very impressive.

Think of how impressed the Taliban must be when they look up.

Hats off to Boeing, the United States Air Force, congress of the time, who provided the bucks, and the men who have, are, and will fly the Buff.

Some designs are so elegant, all they need is tweaking and critiquing. John Browning designed a handgun over 90 years ago - go to a pistol match next week and see what the winner shoots.

One day I was sitting in a shallow hole near Khafji getting shelled by South African 105's when several B52's flew over... a cowinkydink I'm sure, the B52 is not known for close in support ops. I'm sure those Iraqi cannon-cockers were impressed (the few that got out alive) but no one was happier to see them, if only the contrails, than I and my merry band of rag-heads.

Where I grew up, Pratt & Whitney borrowed a B-52 to test the JT9-D engine, the one for the 747. Stories were, they would take off using all 7 engines, (They removed two engines and put in one JT9-D), then at altitude, used just the JT9-D engine to fly sometimes.

When I was in high school in southern Iowa in the 1960's, the SAC base near Omaha was sending B-52's on low-level (and I mean really low level) training flights over our town. One spring day in the library-study hall, one of the guys looked out and observed a big B-52 sailing by quietly...He let out a yell; AIR RAID !
75 kids roared with laughter.

None of the H-models saw service in Vietnam; instead, they were standing "nuclear-alert" duty on runways in places like South Dakota.

I used to work with guys who "got" to walk around these birds. One of the worst things you could hear was "You're got orders for Minot." Minot, it's not the end of the world...but you can see it from there.

The B58 was was very advanced for its time, but it was too dangerous to fly. It had a bad habit of losing tails (or wings?) during high speed flight. It did not last long.
