Per all Bible scholars the " sword" is a symbol of his word, not a physical sword. HE has a two edged sword, (meaning his word )will cut to the soul of mankind.
When Peter went to cut off the ear of the Roman soldiers in the garden of Gesthemanie with a sword, Jesus rebuked Peter and said " if you live by the sword you will die by the sword".
