When you start to study ancient history and then you open your ears and start hearing what Jesus had to say, you'll find out from ancient history three groups of people occupying Jerusalem at that time. One of the groups was called the Essenes. The second one was called the Seducees, and the third one was called the Pharisees. Jesus said about the Pharisees, they are the ones who are sitting in Moses' chair. Then he couldn't have been one of them, could he?
Seducees' beliefs were very similar to those of liberals. There is nothing after death, and you have to get whatever you can in this life. Jesus couldn't have been one of them either, logically looking.
Then we're left with the last group of people, the so-called Essenes who travelled from village to village, helped the poor, fed the hungry, and provided medical care for poor people. I guess, when you go through history and take a good look, Jesus appears to be an Essene. That means, definitely not a liberal or a conservative.

I thought the Essenes were Sun worshippers.

Look a little closer at the Pharasees, there were two schools of philosophy at that time. The school of Shamiah and School of Hillel, the Messiah as reflected in the Apostolic writings for the most part taught according to the pholosophy of Hillel. The followers of Shamiah and Hillel actively, sometimes with great hostility, opposed each other. The Apostolic writing reflected the Messiah's opposition to the positions of Shamiah. However the Missiah also instructed his students and believers to do as the Pharasees taught but not what they did, they taught the whole Torah, not just the Ten Statments.
