I think you'd have to know that from the book to read thata into her performance. All I could get from her performance was "Wow, these elves are really weird!"

In fact, (and this is not a lie) I did not read "The Fellowship of the Ring". I listened to the 'book on tape' more than ten years ago and really didn't take that impression from the tape. It was truly what I gleaned from the film.
Now, admittedly, I had read the negative comments about Cate Blanchett's performance before seeing the film so I suppose I was looking for something more to suggest that she really WAS trying to convey, well...something more.
