All the ones you have named are sell-outs, turncoats and unreliable, characterless people to one degree or another. There are no R.E. Lees, Forresters, or S.W. Jacksons in that crowd.

S.W. Jackson? Who's that?

You mean Thomas Jackson, known as Stonewall? How odd.

And Lee:

"The framers of our Constitution never exhausted so much labor, wisdom and forebearance in its formation, and surrounded it with so many guards and securities, if it was to be broken by every member of the Confederacy at will. It was intended for 'perpetual union' so expressed in the preamble, and for the establishment of a government, not a compact, which can only be dissolved by revolution, or the consent of all the people in convention assembled. It is idle to talk of secession."

R.E. Lee January 23, 1861

Robert E. Lee was a sell-out--he sold out the Union.

The only reason he wasn't tried for treason was due to the magnaminity of the victors.

The reason Lee and Jefferson Davis and others were not tried for treason is the U.S. government knew it didn't have a case. Lee, Davis, and all other graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, were taught in their Constitutional Law courses that secession was a legal right of the states. Why weren't the legislators of the New England states accused of treason after the Hartford Convention?

Do you know where that Lee quote from #32 comes from? I haven't studied Lee at all. The quote is intriguing.

I just got a pair of books from 1929 (originals). One is called Abraham Lincoln: The Path To His Presidency, A Cartoon History. The other is called Abraham Lincoln: The Year Of His Election, A Cartoon History. Both are by a man named Albert Shaw. I am looking into these books to see what they are worth. As for their content, they are well written, illustrated historical accounts of the period. Real treasures on that account.

AND I am finally going to dig into McCullough's John Adams. Very exciting. Just thought I'd share my thirst for American history with you. MERRY CHRISTMAS, WhiskeyPapa, and everyone else too.

He wasn't tried for treason because the smarter among the Yankee lawyers knew that the case could not be made.
