When Ishmael Asad Muhammad was born, he weighed about as much as a can of Coke and could fit in his doctor's hand.

Doctors at Mission Hospital gave him less than a 5 percent chance of surviving. His twin brother, Jihad Amir, lived only an hour and a half.

Great to see!

Our nine year old daughter was born at 18 ounces. She is doing remarkably well as a thriving third grader.

Before she was born, our Doctor had recommended an abortion because she thought we'd be facing a little baby that would have multiple handicapping conditions. My wife and I felt that we would rather have the baby, knowing that his/her life could be a struggle, rather than wonder the rest of our lives "what if" had we proceeded with an abortion. (Besides, our strong faith in God certainly guided us in making the absolute right decision!)

Lots of prayers, and wonderful care from one of the best neo-natal centers in Wisconsin, saved her life!

When I look at my daughter now, I beam with pride and thankfulness!

God truly has provided us with a miracle!

Last Feb 3rd my first grandson was born three months early at Fairfax INOVA, weighing in at 2 Lbs., 1 Oz. He is now almost 20 Lbs. and doing fine. There is nothing, I mean nothing, like walking into the NICU and seeing the miracles that are being worked. My son told me later how he was just as amazed at my reaction (mouth hanging open) as he was at all the wires hooked up to little David.

A 14-ounce baby? A 19-ounce baby? What's up with that? Hasn't it been scientifically proven that nobody under eight pounds is really a human being?

I contribute to the local hospital for just such services, on behalf of little tiny preemies.

A very worthy cause.

Thanks, but I didn't do anything. I was so proud of my son and his wife as they spent much of the three month hospital stay with the little guy. As a grandparent, I found out real quickly that my job was to do all the worrying. They didn't appear to even have time to reflect on all of the ups and downs of that period. I talked to a lot of other moms and dads at the hospital and I have just a little feel for what you have gone through. Hold your child tight, always.

I understand that Fairfax is one of the best on the east coast. They actually have four NICUs. The walls of that wing are covered with hundreds of photos of previous patients who come back for the reunions.

Bless you for your decision to have this child. I'm sure that she IS a blessing.

My sister-in-law had a similar experience.

Her doctor told her that her yet-to-be-born child was severely handicapped-according to his tests. And without even waiting for that devestation bit of news to sink in, he asked her when she wanted to have the abortion!

She told him that that wasn't an option and today they have a very healthy 6 year old.

Makes you wonder how many children are aborted due to these tests.
