Hispanics miss family at holidays
Cincinnati Enquirer ^ | December 22, 2001 | Terry Flynn

Many have relatives overseas

Raoul Morales of Carthage would rather be in Guatemala, spending Christmas with his parents and siblings. But his job at a Springdale meat packing plant is more important to his family, so this year's Feliz Navidad will be spent with friends and relatives in Greater Cincinnati.

In fact, many Hispanics who live on both sides of the Ohio to work, will be spending Christmas here even though they'll send most of their earnings to family back home in Mexico or Central America.

For them, Christmas can be a lonely time. “It's difficult to be so far from your family now,” said Mr. Morales through an interpreter.

“I've returned to Guatemala five times since I first came to (the United States) 11 years ago. But I couldn't go back for Christmas this year.”

Mr. Morales works at the John Morrell meat packing plant in Springdale, a job that enables him to maintain a life here and to help his family in Guatemala. Without elaborating, he said it was impossible for his two brothers, his sister and his parents to leave Guatemala.

The Tristate's Hispanic population has more than doubled during the past decade. The 2000 U.S. Census places the number of Hispanics in the eight-county area at 22,000, but those who operate Hispanic service agencies think it's at least double that. Sister Margarita Brewer, director of Su Casa, said there are many Hispanic people who make the journey home, to Mexico or elsewhere, for the holidays.

“But there are many more who cannot leave, who won't see their family,” she added.

“We try to help any way we can. We hold a special Christmas Eve party at St. Charles (Church in Carthage) to bring everyone together and bring a little of home to them here.” The party will include Hispanic food, pinatas, dancing and music.

Carmen Medina is luckier than many, in that she has two daughters, a grandchild and other relatives in Northern Kentucky who will be with her in her Southgate home for Christmas.

But she won't deny she misses her native Puerto Rico. “My husband is in Puerto Rico. It's about 90 degrees there right now. And I miss the beaches,” she said.

“But I like it here very much. This country is great. I have a new job with Delta at the airport, and this is now where home will be.”

For illegal aliens from Mexico, returning home this year is much more difficult and potentially dangerous, especially after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Doug Mosier, a spokesman at the Border Patrol in El Paso, Texas, said that, in the 14 years he has been with the patrol, he has never seen border security so tight. That makes it very difficult for illegals who have gone home for Christmas to get back to their new homes in the United States.

He said the agency has arrested about 30 percent fewer illegal immigrants in the past two months than during the same period last year.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I'm sick of articles like this.

I'm sick of them too....almost every day my liberal rag (The Green Bay Press-Gazette) has sappy articles about Hispanics. It's all part of the brainwashing to make the sheeple accept the fact that Hispanics will become the majority anytime soon.

And that means that there will be more hands receiving money from tax revenues, and LESS people paying into it. Remember Baby Boomers parents are dying off quickly, and Baby Boomers are retiring and starting to die off too!

Pretty soon businesses like H&R BLOCK will be out of business as the Latinos and Chinese all will be working under the table. They have no use for any ole steenkin Tax Forms!

As far as I am concerned anyone who invades my country illegally has already slapped me in the face and the laws and rights of my nation. If I had the disrespect to move to Mexico uninvited and make demands I would get a bullet in the back of the head at the most, or collared and hurled back across the border at the least.

Well, those aliens don't mind slapping you in the face. They have Washington D.C. on THEIR side!

I live in the Greater Seattle area and they just opened a store nearby where everything is in Spanish. Nothing illegal about that, of course, but it indicates the extent of illegal immigration in this country. We're losing the country, and the only consolation is that Hispanics aren't likely to have much sympathy for the antics of Jesse Jackson and Muslim 'anti-discrimination' activists.

timestax posted, "And MOST of their pay is UNDER THE TABLE,TAX FREE. They don't have to be bothered filling out any "stupid ole taxforms" and they pay NO Federal,State,City/Local taxes!"

Yet on a special giveaway program that the demonicRats got on the law books before Newt and his guys took over was a tax rebate for those who didn't pay taxes. Guess which group really benefitted from this!

I have not read the newest tax bill. Apparently if it becomes law, again those who don't pay taxes will get a so called rebate. This is just payola by the demonicRats for the illegal alien votes in each election!

Our local rag has at least one daily story like this one and pushes for housing for these people. I see public housing as a way for them to avoid spending money here, which means more money to send back to their home countries.

That means that Californians who work and pay taxes have less money for their families, churches and those who need that money. This is particuliarly tough to tolerate as the super rich winos who own the vineyards and wineries hire these people, make fortunes and expect the rest of us to house them, feed them and provide medical care for them! Of course most of the super rich winos inspited of urban legend are left wing maggots not evil conservatives!
