UC Santa Cruz had or has Angela Davis on faculty. I believe Huey Newton got a Masters degree there, or at least worked on it. Beautiful place however.

I was at UW Madison in the superheated years 1967 & 1968. You could drink low-octane beer in the Student Union restaurant at 18 and real beer in the several heavily patronized student bars right near campus on State St. People stood in line in frigid weather for an hour on Thurs. nites to get in (weekends began Thurs. nite).

Recall anti-war riots in which near-campus stores had windows broken. Witnessed rallies led by budding young socialists, one of whom years later was elected Mayor.

Got my first whiff of tear gas when the fuzz cleared out a building that had been occupied by protesters opposed to CIA recruiters. I was outside the entrance and watched the cops go in and bust heads when protesters sprawled on the floor. We all called it a "police riot" and it was well known that the cops were happy to lay into the priveleged lefties - a big cultural gap existed of course. Heavy leftist atmosphere was often attributed to the large contingent of "New York Jews" attending, ruining things for the decent natives of Wisconsin. (no slur here by me - just reporting the zeitgeist)

I was a Poli Sci major and felt I got a fair education. I can't recall any major bias in my instruction but I would probably not have noticed some subtleties I might react to today. Things undoubtedly got much worse when the students of my era became tenured profs years later. I quit sending alum donations when Shalala took over and have never resumed.

Gotta say I enjoyed going to UW. Playboy named it one of the top 10 party schools and we were so proud. But I doubt I would send a child there today.

One moment I will never forget is hearing on the radio that Otis Reading had been killed in a small-plane crash as he neared Madison to perform at the grand opening of a new club. (I had been planning on attending) A great loss.

You make a couple of good points. WE are now a lot older than when we attended college, and the STUDENTS are now OUR kids, instead of our parents'. So our perspective has changed a lot.

But so have the colleges. Now the professors are idiots from our own ranks, the fools who couldn't make it anywhere else, so they end up in some backwater moo U working for tenure and polluting kids' minds with their intellectualized toxic waste.

Those two factors should breed a sea change in the atmosphere at the nation's colleges. We KNOW what went on at our own schools, back in the day when a lot of this stuff was pretty new. Hopefully, we're not going to let our own kids get away with some of the stuff we got away with. And we're not going to let the professors get away with their incompetence and Red sale either.

University of South Florida finacial aid worker told me there was no finacial aid for me because I was white. This was after serving 4 years in the Air Force. And she was right, I did not get a single dime of aid even though I graduated JuCo with a 3.3. I wonder what the response would have been if my pigmentation was black or brown.
