I received this e-mail on December 13, 2001.

Name This Country

709,000 Regular (active duty) personnel.

293,000 Reserve troops.

Eight standing Army divisions.

20 Air Force and Navy Air Wings with 2,000 combat aircraft.

232 Strategic bombers.

19 Strategic Ballestic Missile Submarines with 3,114 nuclear warheads on 232 missils.

500 ICBMs with 1,940 warheads.

Four aircraft carriers and 121 surface combat ships and submarines plus all the support bases, shipyards and logistical assets needed to sustain such a naval force.

Is this country:

Russia? No

Red China? No

Great Britain? No

France? Wrong again.

Must be USA? Still wrong.

Give Up?

These are the American Military Forces that were eliminated during the Administration of Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

Sleep well America.

Old and lame. This was a trend started by George Bush. I certainly remember closing down 2nd Armored Division (Fwd) while he was in charge, and that was one of many units.

Clinton's big screw-up was to continue Bush's cuts, but also increase the operational temo at the same time with no consideration for the effects.

I may be disagreeing with you on the other thread we're on, but I have to agree with you here. I separated on 1 OCT 94, under the program that President Bush started.

Actually I don't think we're too far apart in the general view, just ironing out small things.

So, who did you get to close down? It was really sad to see 2AD prove itself in the Gulf, only to come home to be deactivated as its reward.

I was at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, NV...the base that will never close. I went through the closing of an active Fighter Wing (474th TFW) back in the mid-80's, but was out under the SSB when they gutted the Air Force. I was a jet engine mechanic, and was told I could take the offer, cross-train to cook, or wait a year and quite likely get booted out with nothing more than a "thank you goodbye."

See the insert on page 3:
"CAN YOU NAME THIS COUNTRY?"
The main article, Statesmanship and its Betrayl, by Mark Helprin, was published in the April 1998 edition of Hillsdale College's IMPRIMIS, and is discussed in these Free Republic threads.
FYI, while the e-mail you received has been posted here MULTIPLE times (SEARCH for ALL WORDS: "name country") - with various titles - no one ELSE credited its true author properly either!
