Similar to situation in Taiwan, without the roaming bands of thugs! However, everyone in Taiwan gives this advice when you find an intruder robbing you in the dead of night: "Lie still and pretend you are sleeping. For if you resist, the intruder is likely armed and will kill you!"
Easy to get an illegal weapon here, thanks to smuggled guns from China; hard to find decent people with guns.

It's my job to go outside and identify the Bump. It's her job to cover my @$$.
The kids know to NEVER open a door without waking one of us.
