a·li·yah (äl-ä, -l)
n. pl. a·li·yahs, also a·li·yot (äl-t) The immigration of Jews into Israel.
Actually, I think it means "coming up." It is used as a metaphor for coming to Israel.

I read some interesting things about Central and South American banking systems of late - apparently, many of the currencies there are "backed" by dollar reserves, which means that the central banks must maintain dollars in reserve for the amount of currency outstanding in the economy. This means that export to the United States is an absolutely crucial component to their monetary policy, so that there is a net influx of dollars to the bank reserves and therefore the ability to issue additional currency for economic growth. And since the US can issue more dollars with a few computer keystrokes, this dollar reserve system is a leash that keeps these economies at the mercy of the US financial system.
I suspect that if 2001 hadn't been such a dismal year for the US, Argentina would be in much better shape than it is.

Not sure why Jews are being blamed for the Argentine gov't's mishandling of the budget and economy. We think that we are so advanced, yet there's always the need for scapegoats to blame when things go awry. The President has announced that he is resigning. How about some posts on FR that talk about the gov't and what they have done to bring this on versus these anti-Jewish posts. If you're conservative, it means you have some sense, and a firm grasp of right and wrong. Any place the Jews settle, they prosper; everywhere they are persecuted, the ones who persecute them bring a curse on themselves. The posts on Freep are getting dumber and dumber as time goes on. I almost think that some leftist, Democratic organization is paying people to post garbage on this site, just to repulse and provoke the authentic conservatives who discuss legit issues here.....

No pogroms! Get a better Article here on how the anti-semitism was pricked. Draw attention to it and tell these Jews to pull heads out of the sand. Be Nice.

Following WWI it was a toss-up as to which nation would become America's richest, the United States or Argentina. Buenos Aires became the Paris of America with marvelous avenues, buildings, parks and museums. The cultural life was incredible. And then came the world-wide depression and fascism. And government with a head-lock on commerce. And then Peron. And then socialism. And then it was good-bye Argentina. The tens of thousands of Jews who immigrated from Europe to Argentina around the turn of the century helped the nation grow, but for nearly eight decades there has been a black swirling current of ugly anti-semitism that has been pushed by the labor plug-uglies, mostly Italian and Spanish with anarchist and Marxist tendencies. Now the problem is worse with the introduction of tens of thousands of "turcos" from the Middle East. It would be sad to see the Jews leave Argentina, but they usually discern when it was time to leave a sinking ship, and go, if there is someplace to go to.

Argentina was once wealthier per head than France, Italy and Sweden. Now it is about the same level as Hungary, although now even the Hungarians may have pulled ahead.

A good number of the Argentinean population here is South Florida is Jewish. If one looks at many of the Jewish Congregations in Aventura and Sunny Isles (Miami-Dade County), you will notice that while the older people are transplanted New Yorkers, the younger members are from Argentina, Brazil, Russia, etc.
