Rockefeller's Pay Raise vs. Your Tax Rebate
email [Jay Wolfe for Senate 2002] ^ | 12/19/01 | M. Jay Wolfe

A "Letter to the Editor" by Jay Wolfe

It seems to me that the number of Elvis sightings cannot compare to Senator Rockefeller’s numerous appearances in West Virginia this year. Has anyone else noticed how publicly attentive and responsive Rockefeller has become to his constituents?

I wonder if my letter to the Senator, dated February 1, 2001, informing him that I plan to be his opponent in the 2002 election, has had anything to do with his public rebirth? Let me remind you that, February 1, 2001, was the day Rockefeller voted against the confirmation of John Ashcroft as Attorney General.

Since then, the Senator’s re-election campaign operations have been working twenty-four seven. For example, he made statewide visits to meet with editorial boards of most of the daily newspapers explaining in detail why he would vote against granting a $600 tax refund to West Virginia’s working families. He has been front and center explaining how federalizing baggage handlers would make air travel so much safer. On statewide radio while discussing the events of September 11th, he announced that he is having second thoughts concerning his long time opposition to a missile defense system. And rumor has it that Hallmark, even in a recession, is having a robust year because the Senator has greatly expanded his Christmas card list.

However, the re-election propaganda machine has been noticeably silent over the Senator’s most recent controversial vote granting himself a nearly $5,000 pay raise. In an attempt to block the pay raise earlier this month, Democrat Senator Russ Feingold made a logical plea to all senators. In essence he said that considering the facts that the budget surpluses have ended, the economy is in a recession and thousands of workers have been laid off, now would not be a good time to increase senators’ salaries to $150,000. Senator Rockefeller voted with the majority to raise his own salary anyway.

Senator Rockefeller may be one who gives his salary to charity each year because of his own personal wealth. If that is the case, it is an honorable act that is to be commended. Nevertheless, I recall the New Jersey senate race last year in which Jon Corizine spent $60 million of his own money to get elected. Seems to me that we could have reduced congressional salaries by $5,000 and still had multi-millionaires lined up to buy a seat of influence.

So, the message we received is that West Virginia families don’t deserve a $600 raise while Senators deserve a $5,000 raise. Come on Senator Rockefeller, the rationale escapes us. Give us a clue. Why did you vote yourself a pay raise?

He voted against a tax cut for us working stiffs and voted a raise for himself out of the taxes we are forced to pay? This is robbery.

Wasn't that rocky feller voted the most inconsequential person in the senate awhile back?

How many other senators voted against our tax cut and voted a raise for themselves out of our hard-earned money? This is pure corruption!

I hardly think so, given that the salary in question came out of our pockets. I doubt that he forgot to write that off on his taxes. If he doesn't need his salary he should return it to us.

I heard him on the radio the other day, bragging about the Sweringin(sp) getting a jet ok'd in the next year or two. I'm not holding my breath.

Tiger Aircraft HAS rolled-out their first plane, but they are just tiny recreational nose prop puddle-jumpers.

Sweringin keeps coming up with "design change" excuses for the delays. - been going on for years... this Chinese/San Antonio Texas clusterf*&k can't get their rickety designs approved, and when they do they find that the competition has beaten them to the market so they have to scramble and change to something else.

I won't hold my breath either, but unfortunately the dems keep making photo ops and media coverage out of Rocky's self-named airport industrial park out here in the eastern pan-handle. Sounds like some serious FReeping is in order for the next event.

I was just on another thread about Helen Thomas. Just for fun, let't get Helen to interview rocky. Helen asks a queston that makes no sense and he gives a response that makes no sense. I wonder who gives up first?

Thanks for the notice of this thread. I am glad to report that I am already involved in Jay Wolfe's Senate campaign. It can happen! Just think of his goal based on past elections of about 290,000 votes. If that many people can understand what a creep has been grasping onto the honor of being US Senator from WV for all too many years, then Rockefeller couldn't spend any amount of money to get them to vote for him.

Remember about 6 years or so ago when in the race for WV State Treasurer, Governor Caperton's ex-wife spent $250,000 only to lose in the Democrat primary to a good guy who spent about $9,000?

To Jay, who I greatly hope is a member of FreeRepublic: let's get that Wolfe Pack growling!

RF, It,s like the guy says. when an economic depression occurs, government workers have NO idea it is happening. Course if "it" was replaced with "what" in the last sentence, the time period would be ALL THE TIME. Peace and love, George.

Pinging our southern neighbors in the Bluegrass state. Alright now, FReepers in all surrounding states (MD, PA, VA, OH, KY) have been pinged and the wagon is circling. We have Rockefeller's campaign turf in the crosshairs.

Rockefeller doesn't care how much he spends to keep daddy's dream alive. Remember when he ran against Raese for governor. He spent $33 per vote that he got. That'll buy alot of liquor and union votes.

My favorite Jay quote was when he was trying to get Hillary's healthcare scam passed. He said, and I paraphrase "Healthcare is too expensive for ordinary Americans. If I didn't have coverage through the senate, I wouldn't be able to afford it."

As a reporter, I've covered a few of Jay's speeches and I've interviewed him one-on-one. Believe me when I tell you the man is dumb as a post. Byrd is incoherent because he's old and addled. Rockefeller is incoherent because he's just not too bright.
