If Johnny was 16 when he went off to YEMEN to study, and he was also 16 when Dad left Mom for another MAN, then at the very least you can conclude that the parents were so involved in their own &^%(*# problems, they were doing little to no parenting.

Now that you mention it, there is a certain weird symmetry in the case of a 16 year old leaving his own country and going to YEMEN, and that boy's father leaving his family and moving in with a MAN. From what I gathered, the father felt no real alarm when the son announced what he was going to do, as if it were all just to be taken in stride in this "highly irregular" family.
