So many parents do so many crazy things and still the kids survive. There is no cause and effect straight line (fortunately.) With so many ways for Walker to be messed up it's hard to imagine this particular result as having any direct relevance. Although, now I come to think of it, the Taliban were militantly anti-homosexual. Maybe there is a connection. He certinly went in search of Certainty in his life. Hate to play armchair psychologist but that could be a factor. Walker , perhaps, sought certainty and absolute truth. He would have found that with the Taliban. He could also have found it closer to home, but chose not to.

I can think of nothing that would have destroyed and horrified me more than my parents divorcing and the reason being one of them becoming a homosexual before doing it. The boy probably got to see his mom's reaction to being dumped for another MAN too, which I am sure wasn't a very pretty sight. This young man is the product of the worst liberals can put out - no foundation, no religion, no gender identity with the fencehopping, divorce, too much money and a moral compass that was evidently completely broken. His dad should have been with the SON, taking him to ballgames, swimming, father-son bonding, dad should have been the healing force in his own family but no he's busy finding himself sexually late in life and let his kid go adrift smugly thinking throwing cash at the boy was the liberal cure-all. It wasn't. The son went after that which he never received from his parents - he was looking for something STABLE in his life and with no adult guidance (because there WAS NONE) he woefully went far off course and ended up as a religious fanatic. This is what happens when liberals breed and it ain't pretty because they seem to think that is where their job ends.

Your depiction of Walker's boyhood sounds - in most details - like a pretty typical childhood for millions of Americans. By your logic the Taliban should have been swarming with young American recruits. As to the prescription for healthy childhood - well... healthy children are raised in many ways. Love and the respect of parents for who the child is is generally considered central. The actual activities - opera-going or deer hunting, or both - are not so important as that essential love, support and respect for the growing individual.
