NOT THAT IT MATTERS a whit to us here in the cool, gray city of love what Frank Lindh, daddy of the Taliban warrior from Marin, does, did or dreams of doing with other consenting adults, but shouldn't he come clean with us about all the facts in the odd odyssey of his son?

Frank Lindh has been quoted time and again as saying it was his son John's reading of the "Autobiography of Malcolm X" when John was 16 in 1997 that turned his son's head and heart towards Islam. But something else then going on in the family's life may be have been just as pertinent.

When Frank Lindh left his family in 1997, it was to move in with a male companion. Yep. ... The man with whom Lindh lived has since been described as "a family friend," but other family friends say the men lived as a gay couple.

It would take a specialist in family issues to map the constellations of feelings and problems that would describe John Walker's path toward Islam in 1997, but sources close to the family say the father's turn of life from married man to modern gay man startled and flustered the 16-year-old.

Given the pummeling that the Walkers and marvy Marin County have taken from the national press over their wayward son, you can't blame the old man for wanting to suppress reporting on his sexuality. ...

I saw one photo of the father and he and the son both look rather jewish. The son seems to have switched from "Lindh" to "Walker" when he went over to Islam - could it be because it was less jewish sounding? Just idle speculation, nothing more....

Is Lindh a Jewish name? I thought it was German. Whatever it's origin, there were several articles that came out within the last few weeks that discussed Lindh's Irish Catholic background. In addition, there were pictures of a family trip to Ireland, so my guess is that the family is at least partly of Irish descent.

The really fascinating thing about this is the position of the Taliban vis-a-vis homosexuality. They believe in stoning homosexuals to death. Perhaps if Johnnie Walker "gets away" with treason, he can have a date with Ol' Sparky for stoning his father to death.

And they married, had kids and then "came out"? Give me a break. I have nothing against a person who wants to be "gay". I do have no respect for someone who screws up a whole family before admitting his "propensity".

Years ago I lived adjacent to a family that had four girls. Just about the time that the first was getting to her teen years, the father left and moved in with his boyfriend. This guy was a supposed educated individual, a systems analyst for HP. Really screwed up that family.

Seriously, I am not a gay-basher, but when adults drag little kids into their screwed-up emotional problems, it is selfish and inconsiderate.

Hey, I just saw a tape of Johnny Walker being interviewed on CNN! Did you see that? That guy is really SCREWED up in the head. He even talks with a weird foreign type accent. So many parents do so many crazy things and still the kids survive. There is no cause and effect straight line (fortunately.) With so many ways for Walker to be messed up it's hard to imagine this particular result as having any direct relevance. Although, now I come to think of it, the Taliban were militantly anti-homosexual. Maybe there is a connection. He certinly went in search of Certainty in his life. Hate to play armchair psychologist but that could be a factor. Walker , perhaps, sought certainty and absolute truth. He would have found that with the Taliban. He could also have found it closer to home, but chose not to.

Just by living in Marin County almost guarantees you're gonna be screwed up in the head. Normality in Marin County is the EXCEPTION to the rule. Daddies, if you don't want your boys to grow up messed up in the head, don't raise them in Marin County.....and don't name them "Lance."
