Planned Parenthood loses funds from the state of Colorado
Denver Post ^ | 12/16/01 | Karen Auge

Planned Parenthood isn't going to get any more money from the state.

The state health department announced Friday that it's going to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains because an audit of the nonprofit organization found it is subsidizing rent for the separate Planned Parenthood arm that performs abortions.

"This news came as quite a surprise to us," said Ellen Brilliant, spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood.

Brilliant, who said she learned of the state's decision through a reporter's call, said the organization charges Planned Parenthood Services Corp., which provides abortions, the same rent it charges all other nonprofits.

"This is not an attack on Planned Parenthood, it's an attack on the 13,000 women that turn to us for cancer screenings, birth control and other vital reproductive services," Brilliant said.

She said she did not know exactly what effect the loss of $381,956 this year will have on those services.

In 1999, Gov. Bill Owens and Jane Norton, state health director, determined that the Colorado Constitution bars using taxpayer funds to subsidize abortions.

That touched off battles in court and in the court of public opinion, with the Owens administration and conservatives on one side and Planned Parenthood on the other.

Eventually, in order to keep state funding, Planned Parenthood spun off Planned Parenthood Services Corp. as a separate entity that performs abortions. Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains provides women's health and family planning services but does not do abortions.

The health department also notified Planned Parenthood on Friday that it may not be complying with federal regulations on fees it charges some low-income women for contraceptives. The department is concerned that Planned Parenthood is charging more for contraceptives than other agencies.

Brilliant said the health department has "taken out of context" pricing information. Planned Parenthood provides 60 percent of its contraceptives for free, she said.

This story was on WND Saturday. I notice that quotes from organizations opposed to abortions that were in Fridays edition of the Denver Post have been deleted from this (Sunday edition) of the Denver Post.

JR has the right idea here at FR, archiving the stories as they originally appear.

The cost of aborted baby parts will have to rise in order to offset this loss.

"This is not an attack on Planned Parenthood, it's an attack on the 13,000 women that turn to us for cancer screenings, birth control and other vital reproductive services," Brilliant said.

Why is it that this statement makes me think of Bin Laden's warnings and threats that an attack on him in Afghanistan was an attack on Islam and its 110M members?

I work in cancer research, and in my opinion, PP has never done anything significant in the fight against cancer, nothing more than a regular clinic could do. I am certain that PP is nothing more than a useless appendage with a leftist agenda that is funded for concocted health reasons.

"This news came as quite a surprise to us," said Ellen Brilliant, spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood.--

What news came as a shock--the cutoff? Or was it finding out Colorado wouldn't let them continue to flout the law? Way to go, Colorado.

Typical two-faced liberal organization! They left out the part that says "for the sake of the children."
