In NYC there is the "Twin Towers Fund", which only benefits the families of UNIFORMED personnel (Fire and Police.) Some of the widows of Port Authority operations personnel-the folks who manned the emergency control center-coordinating the fire response and directing the evacuations- rightly feel slighted by the fact that their loss is not regognized. The operations people stayed at their posts, assisting in the evacuation, despite the fact that they were not sworn to do so.

I believe that more attention should be paid to those folks. Their sacrifice, like that of the Heroes of Flight 93, is as heroic as that of the uniformed personnel

The sad fact is, most people do not plan for their own demise.

I find this hard to believe. I'm a 45 yr old single person and I've had life insurance since I graduated college. I don't have kids but should I go I don't want my family (Mother) stuck with bills. Even during times of unemployment (like right now) I don't let my life ins. slip.

I don't think I'm unusual. I could be wrong but I just thought it's normal to at least have life insurance.

and usually spending 110% of two paychecks. Life eventually catches up with those people. They lose their job, they get sick...or some other financial stress shows up.

Nah, they probably just file bankruptcy and move on. Although Bush did make some headway in addressing that scam. I've upped my insurance next year for me and my family to the max that I can under my employer, now if I can just get the debt paid down...

Your level of personal responsiblity is commendable....and unfortunately, rare. Congratulations on being an "adult".

I used to work in the life insurance field as a side job in college (not as an agent, mind you), and it is startling how little life insurance people have, mostly because people don't want to think about it until its too late, and then people who do plan ahead, buy the wrong type of insurance and therefore can't afford the correct amount.

I agree. We are not required to help out. Those who feel the way you do, will not generally help out. And those who see a needy widow and orphans generally will.

With Christmas approaching, this is an appropriate time for the discussion of charity, as opposed to welfare. Those who are forced to give charity, I refer to it as coercive philanthropy, rarely feel good about it. On the other hand, those who voluntarily provide charity for the truly needy, feel quite good about it. Conversely, those who receive coercive philanthropy, are generally not grateful for the help they receive, while those who receive voluntary philanthropy are quite grateful.

You, and others, who do not feel charitable towards a new widow and her orphans seem to be suffering the effects of having to support coercive philanthropy. I would suggest reading, or at least, watching "A Christmas Carol".

Merry Christmas to all!

Out here in the DC area, a volunteer rescue guy and his rescue dog who assisted in the recovery of bodies in New York WTC, went to the Red cross asking for help. Seems the dog got glass in his eyes and is under vet care. The guy was asking for some help.
They dissed the resuce worker big time and made him wait and made him come back 3 times. Each time making him sit in the waiting room all day.
So the guy gets a hold of a local TV news guy who goes with him to the Red cross with a hidden camera. They then take the film of the Red Cross workers refusing to help to the top folks at the Red cross. They remind the Red cross that the film was already shown to everyone on their news the night before. Needless to say, the Red cross looked bad. They promised to help the guy and his dog out. Geesh!

Look, I contributed to the United Way thinking that the money was going to the victims families. That meant all of the families. Not just at the WTC. I don't care how much they made. They were all working people for the most part and the passengers on flight 93 were heroes. If I can get Mrs. Glick's adress, I'm going to send her a direct donation. If you are not interested in their welfare, don't contribute but I'm not interested in hearing (reading) your disparaging remarks.

A trashy singer who wrote a song about 9-11; we've known her for years; first class opportunist; and would cheat her own mother out of a dime.

I think the questions that have been raised about the "truly needy" and what happened to the millions of dollars already given......do not make the people asking the questions uncharitable to widows and orphans. I think their concern is that the "truly needy" be helped....not some helped, some unhelped...and some enriched...at least financially.

? Surely that covered her husband's take home pay

It is really hard for me to believe that he had no insurance or had never planned for his family in case he died.

He obviously travelled in his work, no travel ins?

What if he had been killed in an auto accident?

OTOH.. These families of flight 93 victims deserve any benefits collected for WTC. Actually they should get a reward for preventing an even worse day.

"Let the Faith Based charities step in. Let them replace the leftist Unite Way. Let us start a FR fund for this woman. I will offer $50.00 to start it off but some one here on FR will have to run the fund. I have not the skill or the time to do this. Dan"

I'm now down to one charity I give my money to, the Salvation Army.

I would gladly give to a fund to The Widow Glick and Beamer.

Is this the same woman I saw on TV who was trying to get the government to cover their expenses? This past week there was a group of widows who had gone to Washington to lobby for "benefits" because the charities were not paying out and they felt the government should allocate money for them...... anyone else know about this?

I do believe that the charities are ripping these people off, but, all of these people who have children ARE eligible for social security benefits, and I would venture to say that all of the professional workers had life insurance coverage - perhaps they haven't been able to claim on the policy because they haven't been able to prove death?

Yes, but should the United Way and Red Cross be expected to keep the survivors living in the same lifestyle they had prior to the attack?

Yes. That money was donated by everyday people to help those families out, not to fund left-handed lesbian surfboard riders. Believe it or not, something like $1 million was raised by Australians for the various funds set up to help the victims in the US.
