I'd like to see handgun possession made a felony and every (non-police and non-military) handgun removed from circulation. Good luck. You're a moron (being as you claim handguns are only for murder) so there's not much chance of you seeing this goal to fruition.

Spanky, You're having a good time tonight, but you only "refute" a few arguments. How about taking on the big one?
You complain that you live in an area that has too much hangun violence, and you wish it would stop. This is a laudable goal. The question is: How do you effect this end? The evidence is in! There is less crime,(of all types) if the folks may or may not be armed. If you restrict ownership, or carry rights, crime goes up. It happens EVERYWHERE it has been tried. This is a central argument and you have yet to address it.
Can you?
Or are you just here to disrupt?
Be well...

I've heard the argument that if handguns were illegal, only criminals would possess them. Thus turning government employees that carry guns into criminals.
I say stiffen the penalty and eliminate the handgun altogether.
Do you mean to say that government also shouldn't have any guns?

Seeing as any and all common sense has left your brain, try this on for size...
Walk around South Chicago with a sign on your back that reads " please don't rob me, I don't have a handgun."

Zon, I think he's given up. He's only been here two months, so forgive him for his ignorance. After he has a chance to become educated, he may mellow.

[Handgun hunting] is a colossal stretch...care to retract? No - I know people who have done it, and if you do a google search on the words, you get 29,400 hits. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=handgun+hunting They talk about hunting deer and boar - not people.
Please address the issue raised in post #16 - where printers are illegal and so only criminals use them to print only illegal, unpleasant things.

"Handguns are designed to be concealed...that's the whole point of their existence" Really now? You sure you want to make such a claim? If your claim is true, can you cite sources from the early days of the development of the pistol to substantiate your claim? Isn't it funny that these handguns were worn outside the clothing as sidearms? Not very concealed! Please cite sources for your argument.
"Also, if a crack addict kicks down your door at 3:00am, do you really think that a .44 will protect you better than a shotgun?"
Maybe. Depends upon the situation, where I'm located in the house at the time, how many corners, narrow hallways, and pieces of furniture that I have to negotiate to drop the perp. Wielding a long gun in tight places is often a tactical disadvantage. Don't believe me? Why is it then that the military uses MP5's instead of long guns in urban assaults? Personally, I prefer a .357 for self defense. The .357 is still rated as the number one one-shot-kill round. So, the way I see it, I'm covered just fine.
This is all fine and well that you feel the need to have a shotgun in your home, but outside your home, you're helpless! Now do you really think that a perp gives a rip about whether he's is committing another felony by having an (as you suggest) illegal pistol. Think about that for a minute. Pistols are already illegal in Chicago...do you feel safer? Do you really believe that if the law was made more severe that all the bad guys are gonna run to the cop shop to turn in their illegal pistols, or stop using them? IF you actually believe this, you are not thinking clearly. You now live in a legally declared "gun free zone"...guess what...only you, the one who follows the law, are vulnerable! You currently live in the reality of the laws that you propose. Welcome to your own logic. I can see that you're not happy about it.
As Harry would say; "Do you feel lucky punk? Well, do ya?"
To: spanky_mcfarland
Handguns are for concealment and murder...not self defense. Think large scale here (if you can) if handguns were completely removed from circulation, armed robbery, drive by shooting, and home invasion would be a whole lot more difficult to pull off.
Also, any gun owner worth his/her salt would much rather defend the homestead with a 12 gauge than some pimp-ass handgun.
Dare a retort?
It's hard to retort to someone who doesn't have the I.Q. to figure it out but rather try to toss feeble insults. As has ALWAYS proven the case in every country guns have been outlawed in - the criminals get them and use them. The ONLY reason a gov't seeks to outlaw guns is to put the citizenship under control (i.e. slavery).
You have no interest in pursuing facts - as they are all over Free Republic. Rather you are the typical liberal - emoting and picking your fleas while muttering "Hillary cares, Hillary cares".
Retort that.

Well said!!!
Below I have copied a portion of a timely email I received from a friend just this morning:
"At Virginia's U. S. Constitution ratification convention in 1788, George Mason was making a speech. In that speech he said, " (W)hen the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised by an artful man, who was Governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should do it NOT openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually." Mr. Mason went on to discuss the militia and their importance against that sort of mission.
Remember, that was discussed in 1788- more than 213 years ago. so they found out at least that long ago exactly how to enslave a people. And that is precisely what they have now: slaves. The people might not consider themselves as such. But semantics don't change the reality of a situation, much as Clinton tried to persuade us. Britain's own Churchill said, "Face the facts or they will stab you in the back." Guess they chose not to learn that simple lesson."

I'm for the criminalization and elimination of all handguns. If someone desires to walk the streets with a firearm, everyone within 100 yards should be able to visually identify this person as a threat. Well, they've tried such an approach in DC - and criminals still have handguns. And how many people with concealed carry permits commit a crime? Hardly any. Like so many gun-grabbers, you prefer to traffic in fear rather than facts. And you don't have to actually fire a handgun for it to deter a crime - studies I have seen indicate simply brandishing the weapon suffices in 97 percent of cases when a handgun is used to deter a crime - like the woman last week who simply showed the perp she had a 9mm.

Gun quotes for Hoplophobes (people with irrational fear of Guns)
"(W)hen the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised by an artful man, who was Governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should do it not openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually."..........I ask, who are the Militia? They consist now of the WHOLE people, except a few public officers."
George Mason, Virginia's U.S. Constitution ratification convention, 1788
"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself! They are the American people's Liberty Teeth and keystone under Independence. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurances, and tendencies PROVE that to insure peace, security, and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indespensable. The very atmosphere of firearms EVERYWHERE restrains evil interference -- they deserve a place of HONOR with all that's good!"
President Geo. Washington, in a speech to Congress. 7 January, 1790
"Americans (have) the right and advantage of being armed, unlike citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms."
James Madison
"The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed unless they try to take it."
Thomas Jefferson
"The strongest reason for the PEOPLE to RETAIN the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against TYRANNY in Government!"
Thos. Jefferson
"No FREE man shall EVER be barred the use of arms"
Thos. Jefferson, Proposal Virginia Constitution, T. Jefferson Papers, 334
"Arms in the hands of citizens (may) be used at individual discretion......in private self defense......"
John Adams; A Defense of the Constitution of the Government of the U.S.A. 471 (1788)
"The GREAT object is that EVERY man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun!"
Patrick Henry, 3 Elliot, Debates at 386
".......the PEOPLE have a RIGHT to keep and bear arms."
Patrick Henry, Elliot, Debates at 185
"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."
Alexander Hamilton, Federalist Papers
"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms..."
Richard Henry "Lighthorse" Lee, Second Continental Congress (he introduced resolution declaring American Independence.)
"A Militia, when PROPERLY formed, are in fact the PEOPLE themselves, and include ALL men capable of bearing arms."
Richard Henry Lee, Additional Letters from the Federal Farmer (1788) at 169
Even Jesus let it be known that arming one's self is necessary, though He did not preach spreading the Gospel via violence. Even when He told Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane to put down his sword (after Peter chopped a dude's ear off), Christ did not tell Peter to LOSE his weapon. He told him to put it in its place (sheath).
"........he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one."
"When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace."
Jesus Christ, Luke 22:36 and Luke 11:21, respectively.

An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.
Smith & Wesson: The original point and click interface.
Gun control is not about guns; it's about control.
If guns cause crime, then pencils cause misspelled words.
Free men do not ask permission to bear arms.
If you don't know your rights you don't have any.
Those who trade liberty for security have neither.
The United States Constitution (c) 1791. All Rights Reserved.
What part of "shall not be infringed" do you not understand?
The Second Amendment is in place in case they ignore the others.
64,999,987 firearms owners killed no one yesterday.
Guns only have two enemies: Rust and Politicians...
You don't shoot to kill; you shoot to stay alive.
911 - government sponsored Dial a Prayer.
Assault is a behavior, not a device.
Criminals love gun control - it makes their jobs safer.
If Guns cause Crime, then Matches cause Arson.
Only government that is afraid of its citizens try to control them.
You only have the rights you are willing to fight for.
Know guns, know peace and safety. No guns, no peace nor safety.
When you remove the people's right to bear arms, you create slaves.
The American Revolution would never have happened with Gun Control.

"...everyone within 100 yards should be able to visually identify this person as a threat." I suppose, given that twisted sense of logic, everyone who has a black belt in karate should wear a sign around his or her neck so that everyone within 100 yards could identify that person as a threat. Perhaps we could ban small knives, forcing people to carry broadswords strapped to their backs. While we're at it, let's ban small stun guns. After all, aren't those tiny stun guns designed for nothing more than concealment and disabling?
