I believe the Confederate secret services also attempted to bring smallpox-infected blankets into the USA from Canada during the War of Northern Aggression. Not sure how well that went for them, I think not very. . .

Dr. Luke Blackburn, the future governor of Kentucky, during the Civil War attempted to infect clothing with smallpox and yellow fever which he then sold to Union troops. One Union officer’s obituary stated that he died of smallpox contracted from his infected clothing.
