A security guard has confessed to murdering the former wife of ex-South African president FW de Klerk in her Cape Town beachfront apartment.
The man, who is not been named, was employed by Securicor Gray, the company used to look after the apartment complex where Marike de Klerk lived. He will be charged with murder.
Mrs. de Klerk, 64, who was divorced from her husband in 1998 after 39 years of marriage, was found stabbed and strangled in her home where she lived alone.
'Wake-up call'
Her former husband said after attending a memorial service: "It is my sincere hope that this dastardly deed will once again act as a wake-up call to all of us in South Africa that we must get a grip on the crime situation."
The country has one of the highest crime rates in the world with 21,000 people murdered last year. Police have not ruled out making more arrests over the crime but officers said they had not identified any other suspects at the moment.
Officials have not commented on possible motives for the murder but the guard was traced after using a mobile phone which he had stolen from Mrs De Klerk.

The murder rate, PRIOR to Mandela's and now Mbeki, was very low. If you need exact figures, I will try to get them for you. Just bear in mind, that MOST crimes are now NOT reported, and those that are, MOST are NOT booked / looked into.

Holy Schise. Doesn't South Africa have about the population of California(A little over 30 million)? And they have about 8,000 murders more than then entire USA - population 270 million+.
Compare the murder rate of NYC during Dinkens and Rudy. This hell on earth that SA is living, is headed to the US.
Sheeeeeeeesh ... Not just under Dinkens ( he was THE worst Mayor EVER , and when you look at what some of the other bozos [ " Gentleman Johnny Walker , John V. Lindsey ] did, THAT is saying a mouthful ! ) , but also where the rule of law is almost nonexistant, and / or the black Mayor runs the city , with utter disregard for ALL of the city's populace.
Essentially Schell told the police to do NOTHING when white people, especially blonde blue eyed people, were being beaten, one to death, by black thugs. Frikkin disgrace, Seattle used to be pretty safe, not anymore. When the rule of law is ignored, mayhem and anarchy ensue.
