And if he writes "your" instead of "you're," I don't want to know about it.

Too many posts to respond to here, so I'll try to say it all here.

First of all, I didn't realize his pronounciation of that particular word had already been discussed here. I know he has other quirky things he says, but I think that this is not in that category. Yes, some pronounciations are regional, so those don't bother me. I thought that this one was different, especially since it is a term used often when discussing this war we're engaged in.

I never did get an answer to my question about how to get the message to him other than someone who said he's already been told. If that's true and he chooses to mispronounce it anyways, then fine. I respect his decision to do that and I won't let it bother me any more.

BTW, I found this at Dictionary.com:

Usage Note: The pronunciation (nky-lr), which is generally considered incorrect, is an example of how a familiar phonological pattern can influence an unfamiliar one. The usual pronunciation of the final two syllables of this word is (-kl-r), but this sequence of sounds is rare in English. Much more common is the similar sequence (-ky-lr), which occurs in words like particular, circular, spectacular, and in many scientific words like molecular, ocular, and vascular.

Not to belabor the point, but - in reality, I feel you complainers are yankees who are just reacting to your preception that the easterners are far superior to those from the west. Not true in the least, but that is your history. This could just be the typical "better than the stupid western hicks" rhetoric. And, to that I say get over it. He is a president and what is your title?

I think I can learn to pronounce it the way the President does. It has been said that Eisenhower said it that way, as well.

My sister has a masters degree and is pretty all-around smart. She says real-a-tor instead of re-al-tor. It used to drive me crazy. I repeatedly told her that there was only one "a" in realtor and, how to pronounce it correctly. This did not work. I'm sure she understands that she was mis-pronouncing the word. I'm also sure that she continues to pronounce it incorrectly (at least in my presence) just to annoy me. Therefore, I stopped letting it annoy me. Nah, nah, I win anyway....bwahahahahah!

According to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary , he is pronouncing it correctly.

Yeah, and today's 12th graders can't handle books that 4th graders used to read. It's all just part of the dumbing down of America. They can't have their Global Plan fulfilled if Americans are intelligent, learned, articulate and armed. We wouldn't let them get away with it. But for the last 60 years the government schools have done a remarkably thorough job of dumbing the vast majority of Americans down to where we're just about ready.

I pronounce it the way the dictionary says it's supposed to be pronounced. Actually, I just noticed that the "day" part is supposed to be pronounced "dee". That has always bugged me, too! But, now that I know the correct pronounciation, I will pronounce it that way. Mundee, Toosdee, Wenzdee, Thersdee....

ClancyJ...

Wonder if these same people were as vocal when JFK had a task with Cuber???????

I can just envision these people in open society, correcting everyone in hearing range that pronounce something not to their liking. My language may be insufferable but these people are insufferable, much worse.

Thank you! I couldn't figure out how to get those necessary symbols in there. I should have consulted my "know-it-all" son who is sitting here making fun of me.
