Oh, absolutely. I know this. But that is the whole point in trying to debate this issue is to illustrate that its not a black and white issue. IF you are going to allow abortion in this case (which MUST be performed VERY early, btw), then you simply can't call the person who undergoes this procedure a "baby killer".

This is the same kind of argument where some would say "Abortion is OK in cases of rape and incest". Well, I would argue, what makes it not OK? Because there was no rape or incest invoved? If the purists believe that a life is a life at the moment of conception, why is it OK to selectively destroy that life in certain circumstances.? Afterall, wasn't it still a life, no matter how it was conceived?

There are certain holes in the abortion debate -- I believe the tact should be with taxpayer's dollars and not the procedure itself or the never ending - undefinable "when does life begin" question.

In my personal opinion, abortion is here to stay. Until the day comes when the IRS will allow tax deductions to be taken from the moment of conception (as opposed to birth), abortion will be part of our society. The best those opposed to the procedure can do is ensure that their tax dollars are not being used to fund this procedure.

Or does it include a somewhat larger subset of, say, principled conservatives?

Do I favor abortion? No. Do I favor the use of extrajudicial capital punishment to stop it? No. Would I try to save the life of an abortionist if one was attacked on the street by a "pro-life" individual? Yes.

It's been my (painful) experience that tacking on a clause after a sentence that starts with "but" means "ignore everything preceding the word 'but,' as it's window dressing."

Using a tacked-on clause starting with the word "but" is a favored technique of lawyers and similar ilk.
