I haven't spent too many years studying it, but I and most Muslim scholars can tell you that the Taliban's view on Islam is pretty whacked. It's more like local tribal custom heavily influencing which passages of the Qu'ran they lean hard on and which ones they ignore. We've seen this in Christianity too in the more fundamentalist sects.

Take the Taliban's horrid treatment and low placement of women for example. The Qu'ran has many places where women are held in high esteem. One example is Mohammed's youngest wife, Aishah. (searches the Internet for a quick bio to link to...)

Read about her here and see if you think the Taliban would have allowed this woman to exist. She would have been executed in the early days of their rule, yet she was the most beloved wife of their prophet.
