My husband and I married at 30 years of age. He was quite able to sew a button on and do his laundry, iron, and cook. While it's wonderful to have a wife do these things for him, it's also great that he knows how to do them himself. I can change oil in the van as easily as he can put together a good meal. So it's equally important for women to know basic car care, etc.

Wonderful example of fine parenting ... and of bringing a family together!

**The only reason I had children was to have someone to do the dishes. I consider it my duty to prepare them for the real world......**

I knew how to sew at 6 years old, could cook at 9 or 10, and helped my grandmother organize her checks and count rent receipts when I was 5. I had been allowed to bang my thumb with a hammer so many times that by the time I was a teenager I could properly operate one. My wife's kid couldn't even tie his shoes properly when he was 13. What gives?

My husband was doing his own laundry at age 12. So was I. I have no problems there. It costs $1.50 for each time I have to do laundry, so I drive to my parent's house to do it. I have to do the laundry there then, but it saves me money, and I get a nice home cooked meal.

"Make yourself useful" and "Go earn your keep" are heard a lot in these 4 walls.

LOL. Let's see, there is a big pile of them in my sink. I've been planning on taking care of it for awhile, but I'm putting it off for a little while longer...

Here is the deal I made with my kids: "you guys set up the VCR, the Network, handle all the hardware/software/internet problems and I'll cook, clean, and do your laundry"
I'm quite happy with the results thus far.

You said it all, friend! Good post!

I've always thought it odd that the liberals took away home econ, parenting skills, woodworking, and autoshop classes out of schools.
All those skills I learned in H.S. have helped me out in my adult life. Most importantly, they have saved me money!

And I learned (real fast) how to make a bed!

The other reason for kids..."Jimmy, get me a beer..Thanks. Jimmy. Beer...Thanks""It's actually much more efficient to just strap a Coleman around their waist. Less running back and forth to the fridge for the poor things that way.
