[history]
December 1, 2001 -- ABOARD THE USS BULKELEY - "Take a good hard look - freedom doesn't come cheap. This is where thousands of innocent people died. Remember this place - ingrain it in your heart and soul because it is you who will make a difference for those who died." Those were the words of Cmdr. Carlos Del Toro as the USS Bulkeley, the Navy's newest guided-missile destroyer, sailed past what was once the World Trade Center and is now ground zero.

To say that I wish I were still "Haze Gray and Underway" is putting it mildly. I miss being overseas. I miss having a job where I made a difference. I miss the Navy. What I don't miss, though, is sleeping in a berthing quarters with 100 other guys. Ack, now that brings a shudder to the spine....

ISC(AW)? Wow, I was an IS myself....
IS2 on USS TARAWA (hence the handle), and on USS JOUETT before she was decommisioned. I got hurt pretty badly while on the CG, then did it up a little worse on the LHA. I wanted to stay in, but was unable to do so.

Sorry to jump in when the reply wasn't addressed to me (but when did that ever stop a Navy-man). I wasn't GATOR Navy, but did my more than full share of "staff" (Making a bunch of idiot "O's" look good in front of the Admiral) and did a "Bird-farm" tour and a CG (best tour I ever had!). Have spent time in every "warare" specialty the Navy has... Surace, Air, Subsurface, & Special.
Welcome aboard the thread!

My husband is an STS3(SS) serving aboard the USS Hyman G Rickover (SSN 709), they are currently on 6 month deployment. He just got his dolphins last month (not bad for being in the service since March of last year huh?) and I'm so very proud of him.

I've got a great picture of my ship (USS Antietam CG-54) but don't know how to post it. (Hey I may have been an "IS"...but that don't mean I'm smart...)

I did a WESTPAC on Tarawa LHA-1, April '83 - November '83.

Got me beat...I was air than surface. Which came first, bubblehead or airdale? I could see where you might want some fresh air.
