[history]
December 1, 2001 -- ABOARD THE USS BULKELEY - "Take a good hard look - freedom doesn't come cheap. This is where thousands of innocent people died. Remember this place - ingrain it in your heart and soul because it is you who will make a difference for those who died." Those were the words of Cmdr. Carlos Del Toro as the USS Bulkeley, the Navy's newest guided-missile destroyer, sailed past what was once the World Trade Center and is now ground zero.

Great! Were still patrolling Long Beach/LA Harbors. Seems the patrols have been stepped up. I have a 1600 - 2400 coming up. It sure is boring out there that time of night and a little chilly nowadays. Been having some weather lately and the seas are relatively heavy for these small craft. But hey, if there wasn't something to complain about, they wouldn't call it *the duty*. Good luck, tomorrow.

Aye aye, Capt. Permission to come aboard, Sir?

What Naval Station were you out of? Maybe we did some ops or a WESPAC in that same timeframe.

My appreciation to your family.

SALUTE

What a motivation! Let these sailors SEE the horror spawned on Sept. 11. Let them carry the images of that carnage into the precincts where danger does its business. And let those frozen pictures sustain their courage through the awful commerce yet to come. Pray the memories make sacrifice a willing currency.

The Dupont was homeported in Norfolk then, but was rarely there while I was aboard. We made extended luxury cruises to the sunny seas and beaches of the Middle East, the cool and breezy North Atlantic/Baltic, and all the way around South America. We also made exciting little jaunts to the Carribean to visit GTMO, Rosie Roads, Vieques Island, and St. Croix. A wonderful time was had by all, if I remember correctly.
