Allah is derived from al Ilah, the Meccan local designation used to convey 'the main god of my household' in the time of Mohammed, prior to his effort to unite the polytheistic culture under onbe God. When al-ilah was cited, it referred generically to the one among many gods that the household worshipped. The derivation might also be traceable to the Hindu pantheon.
