The Carlyle Group and The Cypress Group headlined a group of investment firms that bought the health care operations of drug and consumer products stalwart Carter-Wallace. MedPointe owns Wallace Pharmaceuticals, which makes prescription drugs primarily for central nervous system, allergy/respiratory, and pediatric ailments and conditions. The company's other division, Wampole Laboratories, makes a variety of medical diagnostics used by labs and hospitals. Consumer products maker Church & Dwight and investment firm Kelso & Company bought Carter-Wallace's consumer products division, which included such brands as Trojan (the US's #1 condom).
*It's full speed ahead at ship repair contractor United States Marine Repair (USMR). The privately owned company and largest non-nuclear ship repair company in the US operates ship repair facilities at the US Navy's principal ports on the east and west coasts -- Norfork, Virginia, the home of the Atlantic Fleet, and San Diego, California, the home of the Pacific Fleet. It also operates smaller shipyards in San Francisco and San Pedro, California, and Ingleside, Texas. The shipbuilder, which was formed when investment firm The Carlyle Group combined Southwest Marine and Norshipco in 1998, will add a shipyard in Hawaii with its agreement to acquire Marisco. The Carlyle Group owns USMR.
