Bump! At least the Russians will sell oil. Maybe bad for the "special interest groups" bought and paid for by OPEC but more oil is good news.

ahh the LA Times news report cited, very flattering to the ruskies if not also very speculative? I guess a supposition is fact? I say let the Russians deal with them. Russia needs to make a decision if 1.2 billion muslims will have them bowing to mecca twice a day in 40 years?

LOL..

Glad we share borders with Canada and Mexico.

Even with all the oil that the USSR has, it is still in need of more foreign capital. Imagine all the ruskies buying computers with petro dollars, or islamic fundamentalists buying them?

dirtboy don't "think" thou will strain thyself...

Instead get the knee jerk reaction this LA Times piece deserves. Better off without this stupid article anyway on this board.

I hope Russia takes no prisoners with the Taliban, cleans up enough landmines to build a pipeline, so I can buy cheap gas and oil.

The new axis will be Russia, Britain and the United States - very similiar to the axis of WWI and WWII, absent France, which is probably an overall improvement.

Well, let's face it, we were always just being nice letting the French in on our alliance.

Great. They can have the whole miserable desert. Does that mean that they will be paying to rebuild Afganistan instead of us?

The only thing that's going to get built is that long-desired oil pipeline across the place so that cheap Russion oil can get to port. That's probably what this is all about, anyway.

On the other hand, I think we need to recognize that Russia wants some control over what goes on in their part of the world. Would we grant shipping rights to the Iraqi's or North Korean's on the Great Lakes? (And I don't mean if Clintoon was president. Now that I think about, I'm surprised that Clintoon didn't grant shipping rights to the Chinese.)

So the Russians are seizing control of Afghanistan.

Soon Americans will have no place in postwar Afghanistan.

And the problem is...?

Hey, OUR own press slanders us weekly. Does that make us an enemy of ourselves?

I agree. What kind of "article" is this? It reads to me more as an editorial screed against Bush's conduct of this campaign than a straight bit of reporting.

The alignment of Russia with the US is going to happen....we are more alike than different in spite of the Cold War especially considering what Russia has on her southern flank.

OPEC is trying to knuckle Russia on crude prices now.

I don't think Putin & Co. are going to fall into step. They want that warm water outlet the remaining question is what is the "last mile" - Pakistan or Iran?

#14 Ah yes, the Russians, our good buddies who slander us weekly in their press... Mr. Marion, do you read Russian press or you refer to LA Times comissar Margolis opinion? SLANDER! I read a lot of Russian electronic media and a some weekly papers. They are much more concentrated on sladering their own government...

Apparently those photos of Vlad riding shotgun in Dubya's truck didn't quite capture the reality of the situation?

In all of those photos, Vlad always wore black. A little less hair and he could have been Yul Bryner in The Magnificent Seven. Or Zorro, Hopalong Cassidy, ???

Yes, but was it not the Russians that ultimately controlled the Soviet Union by virtue of their population and influence? What better Russian patriot was there than Georgian transplant, Josef Stalin? Are you saying that Lenin through Chernenko acted against the interests of Mother Russian by amassing the greatest empire in world history?

this is all just a big joke, who cares what russia does in afghanistan, lol, i hope russia completely takes over afghanistan and runs an oil pipeline right thorugh it and sells us their oil, so we can tell the saudis to pound sand. the threat is the caveman from the middle east, not russia.

Despite the fact that I'm an old cold-warrior, I wish Russia the best and see a big future for them. They have been at the bottom of the cycle for the past decade or two, and are beginning to emerge. Putin is playing his cards well. He is exploiting the desire of western europe to diversify its energy sources by signing huge contracts to supply oil and natural gas to europe. He is beginning to establish some form of non-gangster rule of law, and is continuing to bring the russian economy more into line with free market principles in some areas.

But, more importantly, the Russian people are beginning to rediscover their culture and history. They are gradually beginning to organize their society on the basis of a sound organic nationalism that unites the Russian people behind their Slavic heritage and their Orthodox Christianity.

America, on the other hand, is rapidly abandoning its heritage and traditions for the same kind of cultural and internationalist marxist garbage that destroyed Russia. I fear that we are heading into the abyss from which Russia is only now emerging.
