One of the most watched Senate races of the 2002 election cycle will be the race in Iowa to unseat Democrat Tom Harkin.
Two candidates have emerged as challengers: Bill Salier and Congressman Greg Ganske. It is assumed by the party establishment and the media that Ganske will be the nominee. A scary thought, to be sure. Especially if you look at Ganske's record.
Favors embryonic stem cell research
Favors McCain/Feingold
Received a D-Minus from the NRA
Sponsored Ted Kennedy's Patients Bill of Rights in the House
Sponsored the bill to federalize airline security in the House
Now, Republicans in Iowa are in pathetic shape. The "leadership" at the state level has squandered a $900 million surplus. The Republicans have a majority in both houses. Any budget problems in the state rest squarely with the Republicans.
We need to get the base out or we will lose. What does Greg Ganske (RINO) have to offer the conservative base? NOTHING! The last three tries at Harkin the nominee has run as a conservative (Tauke being an inept one) and then moved to the left to "cut into Harkin's base." We have lost three straight. It is time to try something new. We cannot keep running Harkin vs Harkin Lite. Unless Iowans are offered a clear choice, and the base is motivated, we are in for six more years of Tom Harkin.
Bill is a farmer from Nora Springs, Iowa with 300 acres of crop land and a farrow to feeder pig business.
Bill is a strict constitutionalist. He opposes embryonic stem cell research, opposes McCain/Feingold, opposes Ted Kennedy's Patients Bill of Rights, opposes federalizing airline security and when asked which of our civil liberties Americans must give up for our security, Bill responds "Zero."

To steal a phrase: Voting for Ganske is like eating a box of Ex-Lax. You always know what you're going to get.
