Probably a lot like your family, ours is very Christian but doesn't go to church. A professor at Bradley University just published a very good book entitled Spiritual But Not Religious, addressing the more-and-more-common "unchurched" Christian. The starting point is that 90% identify themselves as Christian but only 50% go to church.
I was born Jewish, became a Christian in the late '60s, have been Assemblies of God (John Ashcroft's denomination), Southern Baptist (you-know-who-the-ex-pres's [spit] alleged denomination [the spit was for the ex-p, not the SBC, BTW]), and regularly attended several other denoms as well as "independent" churchs. I haven't attended any church for some time now (mainly because too much stuff like what's going on in this thread goes on in RL in churches), but I consider myself no less a Christian for my non-attendance.
BTW, as to "what's going on in this thread" -- after looking at some of it (which has already consumed more hours than I normally spend on "regular" FR browsing), and having found URLs to a couple of "anti-freep" sites (frankly, I had no interest in looking at any of them prior to this), my gut sense is that Jim is getting a mega-dose of "no good deed shall go unpunished". I commiserate with him, as I've taken similar lumps in other venues, although at a level an order of magnitude lesser than he's sustaining. I doubt I'd be able to maintain my composure if I'd taken a fraction of the hit he's enduring.
I don't know how all will shake out, but cynic that I am, I still hope for the best, and I hope FR is able to keep on truckin'. It's a valuable site, and there's really no replacement in sight.
