Under the self-aggrandizing delusion that their input is necessary during wartime

I was under the delusion that only Congress can declare war. Which it hasn't.

Oh well, who needs a Constitution?

(Incidentally, this ought to prove once and for all what a bunch of paper tigers the Russians are. What were they doing over there for 10 years? It hasn't taken us 10 weeks.)

She is sharing a common misconception. The Russians flat out "conquered" every town in Afghanistan in about a month.

That's always the easy part.

It's OCCUPYING Afghanistan which is so bloody hard, and I hope we don't make the error of trying under some misguided notion of "nation building".

Leahy is doing what he is "PAID" to do. The Trial Lawyers ASSociation is one of the biggest, if not the biggest fund raiser for the DNC. No patriotism there.

A precise talismanic formulation by Congress is not necessary to inform us of this fact.

She should read the Constitution thingy. Article I, Section 8...

You'd think they would have bothered to, you know, amend the Constitution formally to that end.

But that old document is pretty much void where prohibited by law now anyway.

There are many factors that make the two cases different. The Russians had no reliable allies inside the country. They did all the ground-fighting on their own. Also, there was no sense among the populace that the Russians were coming to liberate them from a greater evil, such as the Taliban. However, it must be said that the American military outperformed the Russian military about a billion percent or so, given our natural technological edge and the technological edge we gained 20 years after the Russian incursion into Afghanistan.

As for nation building, I don't see a problem with it, as long as US ground-troops aren't directly involved. Just as we "conquered Afghanistan" using proxies while protecting them from the air, we can keep our planes in the sky to back up any other nation-building force, such as Turkey.

Actually I was watching CNN (it's the only news I get down here) and they quoted a poll with the same high 70s in favor of military tribunals if used agains foreign nationals.

Hmmmm... Haven't you heard? It is a Living Document subject to interpetation by (Liberal and only Liberal) courts. (Or at least that is what we are lead to believe by the Media)

Dear Mr. Leahy,
I'm very busy saving your life.

All the best,

Mr. Ashcroft

This would be an oportune time for Ashcroft to come out strong against the gasbag Leahy...not only do the polls favor tribunals, but it is the right thing to do for this situation.

Everytime I think of a jury trial I have visions of Johnny Cochrane and Alan Dirshowitz in a courtroom full of diaper heads dragging on for months with judge Ito playing solitare on his laptop.

So Leahy and the Senate Dims are really going to campaign on equal rights for Al-Qaeda terrorists? I love it! I hope the "hearings" go on for months!

What next, Senator Leahy? Demand the Marines carry Miranda warning cards to read Osama his rights? I can imagine it now. "You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney . . . Oh, forget it. BLAM!"

Oh well, since we inherited Clinton's covert sale of weapons of mass destruction to China and North Korea, (Loral,Chung, etc,), We cannot wait for the Congress to quit profiling for the up coming elections on CNN and Fox, long enough to declare who the enemy is let alone declare a war. Clinton Bombed Yugoslavia defending Bin Ladens Kosovo Muslim partners, That must have been another mistake or just a Congressional oversight. Ops4

There is a general misconception that military courts are somehow unfair...I'm no expert but I recall an article written some time ago where a well-regarded attorney argued that a military court of law was actually fairer than civilian jury trials. Attorneys please jump in, but as I recall most evidence is admissable and prior records MAY also be introduced.
That's more than I really know.

Ashcroft should just ask Leahy why the federal bench is not full, it's been months since the nominees were sent up to congress for approval.

Every time Leahy asks him why he's "abusing" his powers, the should just tell him that thousands of Americans are alive today because they've taken the stand they have taken.

If Leahy brings up the military tribunals, Ashcroft should ask him if he's prefer to travel to Afghanistan himself and sort through who should and who should not receive an full blown American trial.

Leahy needs to be shamed out of his arrogance!

"Clinton Bombed Yugoslavia defending Bin Ladens Kosovo Muslim partners, That must have been another mistake or just a Congressional oversight." No oversight. They gotta be worried about facing the tribunals themselves. They should've gotten the hint when access to intelligence was cut off.

Since the Democrats have apparently decided to pursue the "military tribunal" issue as a way of attacking Bush while pretending to support the war, a few comments are in order about Patrick Leahy, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

1. He is incompetent on history. In his position as Chairman of Judiciary, he d*mned well ought to know about a unanimous Supreme Court decision that says his position is wrong.

2. He is stupid if he thinks the press will ignore his incompetence. For sure, the lamestream media is ignoring his incomptence, but the story of the unanimous Supreme Court decision IS getting around, as witness this article.

3. Senator Leahy is going soft on terrorism, and he's undercutting his own nation in a time of war because he thinks he and the Democratic Party can gain from that.

The best way to prove that Leahy and all others who participate in this shameless stupidity and lying are wrong, is to hang the label "soft on terrorism" around their scrawny necks in the 2002 elections. The interesting thing will be to see whether Bolshevik (excuse me, Majority) Leader Daschle buys into this scam. Second only to Utah, his home state voters will get seriously riled when he goes "soft on terrorism."
