WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush enlisted his father Tuesday as his official representative, dispatching the former president to London and a memorial service for British citizens killed in the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Thursday's service at Westminster Abbey will mark the first time George H.W. Bush, the 41st president, will stand as official representative of his son's nearly year-old administration.
"This is the first of these occasions where the former president has represented the United States," White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said. "And the president is very proud that his father will be representing our country."
Asked if Tuesday's announcement meant Bush would call on his father more again to play official roles, Fleischer replied: "I would not urge you to read anything into any one announcement. There had to be something that came first, and this is it."
The elder Bush traveled to Italy last month and met in Rome with a half-dozen top officials, including Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Pope John Paul II. The White House insisted it was a private visit, and the father was not conducting business for the son.
I would like to think W consults with his father and would use him more as time goes by. If that freak Carter can be used by Clinton why can't W use his father?
More like if Carter is used by that freak Clinton don't ya' think? <grin>
I would'a passed out from shock....
Wait and see!
Looks like daughter Chelsea has already been in on the act......
Chelsea Clinton comforted British victims of the September attacks in America at a fundraising concert in London last night. The 21-year-old daughter of former President Clinton said she was haunted by the September 11 attacks but determined to enjoy university life at Oxford. She said: Of course Im haunted. My city and my country were under attack. I knew people who were in those buildings. She was in Lower Manhattan on the day of the attacks.
