Why do you say that? Could there not be a third possibility? That smokers simply enjoy their habit and dig in their heels when others try to tell them what to do? I believe it's the latter, in fact, I'm sure of it.

I buried my father-in-law at 53. His drinking habits brought him diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver. His smoking habits brought him emphysema and congestive heart failure. He was happy to switch between a can of beer, a cigarette and his oxygen...until the day he died. His first episode with congestive heart failure occurred when he was conscious. His wife (second marriage) took him to the hospital where two days of treatment put him back on his feet. The second time he decided to take a nap after breakfast...and died in his sleep.

One of my dad's college buddies served in WWII. He had a Jap bullet lodged in his elbow. He was also a chain smoker. He noticed a pain in his lung one day. On examination, the pain turned out to be a tumor of the chest wall inside the lung cavity. Every breath caused the lung to rub against the tumor. He said it hurt far worse than the Jap bullet ever did. His diagnosis came at the end of August. His funeral was the first week in November. It was a very miserable 60 days in between.

Her private life must have been very difficult and even worse now, which is probably why she remains so addicted to smoking--I've always felt that many inveterate smokers continue to smoke because they are anxious or depressed, and find in tobacco a means of self-medicating their depression (not that the smoker realizes this).

I quit tobacco years ago--but I don't blame anyone for being unable to quit.

Well, good for you to be so sure. The smokers I know and have known have tried to quit, repeatedly. My late father was one of those. You might as well say, and undoubtedly do, that drug addicts "enjoy" their habit. Relieving an addiction by giving in to it does result in a pleasurable sensation, but I would not say that those people "enjoy" their addiction.

I would reccommend that all ammo producers start marking their ammo as 'Lite', and 'fat free'.

I'm sure this was discussed here at least a year ago. Is there a new angle to the story? I wonder why it's out again.

Because the anti-smokers have geared up to shove their prohibition of smoking down the throats of anyone whose attention has been diverted to America at war. Because Pristine Christine Whitman has dedicated $1.5 million to campaign against smokers in their own homes. Because antis are told if there's no "new" news, to recycle and repackage "old" news to keep the public's attention on the dastardly smoker in order to further their agenda.

I agree. I used to have a lot of anger at my father and mother for their smoking. I thought it was such a stupid, idiotic thing to do. Now, I'm older and wiser and understand a little better what is going on.
