If this is the big menace that you guys say it is, there should be more than one anecdote from 1949.
Listen to the audio program from Catholic Answers with Fr. LeBar, the exorcist for the Archdiocese of NY. He performs 20 or more exorcisms per year. Exorcisms are done in cases of demonic possession. But there is a continuum of demonic aggression from temptation through oppression and possession. Possession is the most visible form of demonic activity, but the least effective from the devil's standpoint.
The devil wants our souls. He wants us to go to hell. So he needs and wants us to freely choose sin. Therefore, possession is not generally in his best interest. He would rather work through temptation, the most common form of demonic activity.
Keep in mind that several years ago the pope demanded that all archdiocese in the world re-install at least one dedicated exorcist, because of the upswing in cases of demonic possession.
