On the back page of the current issue of American Demographics magazine (I can't find it on their website), they have a stat comparison of industrialized countries and the hours the citizens spend at work. They compare the figures from 2000 to the figures from 1990 (same question, ten years apart).
It turns out that America is the ONLY country where people now spend MORE time at work than they did ten years ago.
Yikes! The figures for Japan show that workers have cut their at-work hours almost in half!
Pretty depressing, huh? And it kind of undercuts the constant claims from the computer industry that "automation" will transform our world into a leisure paradise...
