SOUTHERN AFGHANISTAN (AP) U.S. Marine helicopter gunships attacked an armored column Monday ``in the vicinity of'' the new base the Americans have created in the Afghan desert to press their war on terrorism, a Marine spokesman said.
The Cobra gunships destroyed some of the 15 vehicles in the column after it was spotted by ``fast-moving aircraft,'' Capt. David Romley told reporters. He did not say whether the convoy belonged to the Taliban.
The attack was the Marines' first action since establishing a foothold Monday within striking distance of the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan
Romly indicated the attack was still going on when he spoke to reporters shortly before midnight. He would not give any details about the location of the column or the direction in which it was moving, except to say it was ``in the vicinity of this base.''
Nor did he identify the ``troops'' who were attacked by the Marine gunships, but the Americans' new desert base put them within striking distance of Kandahar, home of the Taliban militia that has sheltered Osama bin Laden, the chief suspect in the Sept. 11 terror attacks on New York and Washington.
Romley said the column included tanks and BMPs. BMPs are armored combat vehicles on treads, mounted with guns and capable of carrying at least a dozen people. They were used by the Soviet army during its decade-long occupation of Afghanistan. When the Red Army departed in 1989, it turned scores of them over to its client regime, which later lost them to a variety of local militias and warlords.

Yeah, all posted within minutes of each other. We'll see which one survives.Whichever one survives, it will circulate the net and people will claim either George Carlin or Ted Nugent wrote it.

Foxnews just had an interview of a Taliban guy with eye-patch saying that Kanahar is close to falling and that Mullah Omar was under pressure to give it up !
Also that the Taliban armour was moving toward the Marine newly established airbase.
This from Schuster at the Pentagon!

    Kandahar = Kanahar

Also that the Taliban armour was moving toward the Marine newly established airbase. I get it. The base is bait, and the Tali are being fed to Cobras.

I would hope that our Marines are not going to get suckered into that we-surrender/no-we-don't routine that's been going on in Kunduz.

More "targets of opportunity" for our Air Force and Navy pilots. If Schuster knows about the Taliban troop movement our guys should be all over them.
To: eastsider
Why would they try it with us? All we'd need to keep them from acting up is a C-130 or two with BLU-82s...

I think they just used a Daisy Cutter at the prison riot up north according to a reporter on FOXNEWS!!
The action is really picking up all over Afghanistan!

Talk about riping the ants out of the ant hill. Kaboom.
To: bootyist-monk
The Taliban are a bunch of retards. At this point in the conflict, travelling in an armored convoy is about the least safe way to travel.
Why not just get it over with and assemble under a neon sign reading "Please shoot me"?
