Unlike Emma Bovary and Scarlett O'Hara, Erin Brockovich is a real, live person. She's a 41-year-old mother of three with a gift for publicity. Julia Roberts won an Oscar playing her in the eponymous movie about a legal assistant who got 650 prospective plaintiffs together in 1993 in the desert town of Hinkley, Calif., to sue Pacific Gas & Electric for making them sick. Three years later, PG&E settled for $333 million.

Steve Brockovich "claims his stockbroking firm suffered as a result of his link to her." Correlation doesn't equal causation, but what the hell. ...

Yeah, maybe they'll be "victimized" by the same type of "runaway" juries they make their living from now...

A year or so ago her "cause" was...mold. It had gotten into her new house, and was making her ill, she said, and she was (naturally) suing.

Don't dismiss mold as an illness source--I know--I have mold allergies. I finally had to leave my birth state because of them, and move to a drier climate. However--mold growth in houses is almost always caused by something the homeowner has done--usually failing to keep sufficient heat in the house to prevent moisture buildup in an attempt to "save energy"--although in some cases, construction defects (leaking pipes, bad insulation in HVAC systems, etc.) can indeed be the culprit.

Of course, that doesn't say the Ms. Brockovich isn't an ambulance-chaser playing off her notoriety.

But in an ironic twist, Mr. Brockovich's success brought her something else: lawsuits. Her first husband, Shawn Brown, sued her for "the emotional distress he claimed her fame caused him," according to the Times of London. And second husband Steve Brockovich "claims his stockbroking firm suffered as a result of his link to her." Correlation doesn't equal causation, but what the hell. ...

They're called boobs, ED.
