This is strange. I thought that the very nature of a religion dealt with the spiritual realm including an afterlife. Even the Islamic Faith has an afterlife as part of their religion. I knew that liberal Jews were messed up. I just didn't know how much.
It's not liberal Jews, Don. As was pointed out in the article, Judaism did not have the afterlife as a concept until just before Christ(which is why the portrayal of the Pharisees seems suspicious, they believed as Jesus in an afterlife, why the hostility towards him?)
The concept of religion need not have an afterlife. Even strict Theravada Buddhism would argue that there is no "soul" as we typically understand it. We live multiple incarnations until we find enlightenment, reach nirvana, and become as nothing. Same thing in Hinduism, samsara is the cycle of suffering. Only when that cycle is broken with the extinguishment of the soul, is there finally peace.
