November 24, 2001 -- Is Harry Potter the spawn of Satan?
That's the opinion at one Christian school in southern Australia, where parents voted yesterday to forbid students from reading about the bespectacled wizard and his preteen cohorts.
The vote was just part of a widespread anti-Harry backlash by religious conservatives angered by the best-selling books' blatant celebration of witchcraft and the occult.

Actually, there is a convent near my house that is from the Order of the Sisters of Perpetual Laughter.
Sorry, I don't have any Scripture quote to go with that.
Thank you. : - )
Yes, this iS a forum for ideas, and discussion. It is NOT supposed to be a place where religious zealots and delusional fanatics tell others that they are bad Christians , who don't practice their faith, and will burn in hell. Neither is it supposed to be a site where cherrypicked scriptures, and fringe, emotional opinions are used as refutation for logical , factual , unemotional discourse is pronounced irrelivant.
No, I don't care what you read, or read to your children. Why ? Because I don't think that you would go out of your way to read detrimental ( child pornography, how to build a bomb, directions for robbing banks ) yourself, or to your children. I also don't want others to tell me what I MUST read / read to my progeny , because they don't like it.
That's what is wrong with these threads !
Instead you've chosen to condemn some of us on the first pass.
Oh, yes, I have stated that I think a number of folks are being inconsistent because they allow the gory stuff of Potter, but would cringe at the site of a toy gun on a playground. :( (And you darn well know that's the truth!)
Have a good evening. :)
When would you have time? You've already a full-time job seconding guessing the rest of us. *g*
Since when is FR a forum for those who would cringe at the sight of toy guns? Most of us are firm supporters of the second amendment.
Now, I *would* cringe at the sight of my child on a playground -- particularly if that playground was in close proximity to a public school. *vbg*
As to goriness, what about nursery rhymes or even Mother Goose ditties? Nothing could be worse than Ring Around the Rosie when it comes to gore. Or, what about fairy tales? Plenty of goriness there. It's really all a matter of perspective: knowing your own children and reading through a work with them. I do that with everything they read -- which isn't easy when you have four voracious readers.
As to HP, I, like many Christians, bought the book and read it. I found it to be a thoughtful work and shared it with my children, as I did Tolkien, Lewis, Lloyd Alexander, L'Engle, Jacques, and many, many more talented fantasy writers. I personally find fantasy very conducive to Christian education because it is so clearly modeled around the concept of life as a journey to better understanding. It's the struggle to see through the darkened veil to the face of God. It's a fictional representation of the journey of life that begins with birth and ends in heaven when we then can see God face to face.
Circe was NOT " a goddess of truth ", in any way, shape, manner, nor form. Circe was an enchantress, a sorceress, a witch who turned men into pigs ( swine ) , and is a pivitol charater in the ancient Homeric story of Odysseus, and know as " THE ODYSSEY ". The Romans took and adapted that story, and renamed the hero ULYSSES.
The word circle, does come from the same Latin root as her name. Circe, in ancient Rome, was also considered to be the goddess who rules of the stars, that ruled over man's fate. The circle, was a term used in referrence to structures like the Colliseum, which began existance as the site of funnerial games, in honor of the dead. Circus is another Latin word, which shares the same root and purpose.
Woods, from early Medevial times,in England, France, and Germany were indeed considered to be " evil " and a place where demons and others from the spirit world lived. Again, you are proving your lack of knowledge, by claiming otherwise. Why else do so many " bad " things happen, in fair tales, in woods ?
Yes, kirk does translate into church. It is Scotts, as well as Icelandic, and NOT Celtic, in any way. It specifically means a Presbetyrian church ( Church of Scotland ) and NOT just any church.
The word Kirk is the name for church. It is a (celtic)phonetical representation of the word church.('ch' has a 'k' sound.. kinda.) The interpretation you speak of (that being pagan) is not Scottish at all, rather the reverse. etymologicaly speaking it is a chicken egg thing, Kirk = Church. The name was also atributed to the godess Circe who was supposedly a godess of truth and is represented by a circle.
Kirk however does represent pretty much all churches. Now, "The Kirk" is a different matter all together. That is the Church of Scotland. The general use of the term "The Kirk" is pretty much a slang term. For a while there where no other churches alowed to opperate in Scottland, so all Kirk's were Presbyterian. Another Chicken/Egg thing.
Circe Was indeed all that you say insofar as Homer's Odesy is concerned. She was an enchantress and daughter of Hellios. She had a son with Odysseus. (By the way, all of you who think Potter is bad, protect your kids from anything written by Homer... Odysseus worked with Hermes to counter Circe's spells.)As far as her being considered the goddess of truth, that came from a pagan site and I can't find anything to substantiate that. Some wierdo thinks she is anyhow. I appologize for not looking into that farther.
The point of the post is pretty strait forward though, The word Church comes from Circe.
I will also add the word 'Religion' is just as bad:Webster's Collegiate Dictionary traces the word back to an old Latin word religio meaning "taboo, restraint." A deeper study discovers the word comes from the two words re and ligare. Re is a prefix meaning "return," and ligare means "to bind;" in other words, "return to bondage."
So, Have fun going to Circe in order to return to bondage!
You realize that witchcraft and magic spells don't really work, right? Nearly all children are able to understand this. Harry Potter is in the "fantasy" category, not "vocational training".
Are you sure of that? Was Jesus a fool or a liar? What about Paul?
So what gives with James T. Kirk
And McCoy and Montgomery Scott
Coincidence?
Well, didn't we know that from the episode of The Next Generation where he was found trapped in the transporter beam for 70 years?
Both Jesus and Paul acknowleged them as real.
I am so sick of your self righteous attitude.
You do not know the hearts of the people here posting.
You have no clue what these people believe.
YOU have no idea if God resides in their heart or not.
Let me say it again.
You are not God.
Never will be God.
Never have been God.
You will never know who is going to heaven or hell.
You yourself do not know if you are one of God's children.
scripture tells us "rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft"..
God has spoken on how he sees witchcraft,so to seek it inspite of his word is rebellion.. a double header according to that scripture!
