I didn't read the article, I was just offering eauxgod some friendly insight. BTW, I'm not a neo-reb or whatever else you want to call me. We just have a different opinion on whether or not secession was legal. Doesn't make either one of us a bad person. Freegards.

Lincoln radically adjusted his rhetoric to meet the needs and demands of his business establishment supporters and financial supporters.

Thought that needed repeating.

Don't you remember from the thread on Friday: The North was richer and considered itself morally superior; therefore, secession was not legal!

I wonder if the People in England ever think about how many people have died in Scotland and Ireland due to opression from England over the years

Oh please, the Scots were threatening to invade us if we didn't become Presbyterians. Cromwell smashed them. There was a Royalist army in Ireland. Cromwell smashed them too. England dealt with a threat. Tough if you don't like it.

I was talking about those upright Northerners who made their profit from building slave ships, selling and trading slaves, using raw materials gleaned from slave labor for use in their factories, etc.

Yawn... just more of the same revisionist interpretations of history we have had the unfortunate privilege of hearing. So much has been left out, so many inconvenient aspects of reality, as it existed then, and now, that one need not spend too much time refuting the various and sundry misconceptions and outright distortions listed above. Yah, yah, sure, sure. Lincoln was Hitler... uh huh. Just more of the same...

There were a few Northerners who did trade slaves

For over 200 years!

I am overwhelmed by the profundity of the arguments, the precision of the logic, and the depth of knowledge and understanding of history, of those who have come forth to defend that great American, Abraham Lincoln, on this thread.

We just have a different opinion on whether or not secession was legal.

That's true. I can find no evidence that it ever was. It was a tortured interpertation of the Constitution.

A president would actually adjust his rhetoric to meet political realities? Shocking!

It may have been "a tortured interpertation of the Constitution" to use your phrase, but you can't point to anything specific that takes away a state's right to withdraw when union no longer suited it. Or, are you going to argue that the states were being held against their will after voluntarily giving limited powers to the new federal government?

they did not own the slaves but merely traded them?

I'm sure you're going to tell us how you can 'merely trade' something you don't own.

Don't waste your time with this guy. He's a hit-and-run disrupter, probably from the Democrap Undergroomed Web site. He usually attacks America, George W. Bush, or the Republican Party and then high-tails it out of here.
