Activists Use Internet, E-mail to Advocate for Afghan Women's Rights

NOW Responds to Laura Bush Radio Address

November 17, 2001

"The U.S. and allies abroad would do well to follow the lead of feminist groups, echoed in this morning's statement by First Lady Laura Bush, and ensure that Afghan women's rights are restored in the post-Taliban era, " said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Kim Gandy. "In fact, thousands of cyber-activists have been bombarding the Administration with demands that women be included in rebuilding an Afghan democracy."

"World leaders must bring women to the table in reconstructing the Afghan government and must make women's rights a priority," Gandy said. "NOW's e-mail action alerts and online letters make it easy for activists to get this message to U.S. government leaders."

Last month NOW launched an internet and e-mail campaign urging U.S. lawmakers and government officials to insist that women's human and democratic rights be protected against the warlords vying for post-Taliban control of Afghanistan. The e-messages also demand that Afghan women leaders be sought out and included in reconstructing the country's government. By logging on to NOW's website, www.now.org, activists can send messages to President Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Sen. Joseph Biden and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

"Prior to the Taliban's 1996 takeover, Afghan women were scientists, professors, members of parliament and cabinet members and university professors. They led corporations, non-profit organizations and local communities," Gandy said. "Clearly, there are many Afghan women well-equipped to participate in leading Afghanistan back to full democracy. And in under sixty seconds, anyone can send a message to decision-makers demanding that these women leaders be at the table to help rebuild and lead their country."

"U.S. officials must listen to the diverse cross-section of cyber-activists from across the country and beyond," Gandy said. "What they're saying is that warlords cannot be allowed to divide the spoils and shatter this opportunity for an Afghan government that includes women as full and equal human beings. Women must be an equal partners in post-Taliban Afghanistan."

What do feminists use for birth control?

Their personalities.

"What on earth has happened to you? If you were going for the cheap joke, you failed miserably."

I think TLBSHOW is just frustrated because it was women who gave us Clinton, and women, generally, who tend to vote with the parasite community to give us liberals and socialist Democrats. That's all.

Maybe I'm missing something...

What you are missing is the implication that the only reason the Bush administration gives a damn about Afghan women is because NOW "cyber-activists" held their feet to the fire.

They are saying that the credit for Laura Bush's statement today goes to them, not the administration. That without their "pressure" the Bush admin wouldn't have cared about the rights of Afghan women.

The problem is this: if the NAGs are so concerned about Afghan women, where were they since 1996, where were their "cyber-activists" when their Clintoid hero was in office?

Proving once again, the NAG doesn't really give a sh*t about wmomen, only about advancing themselves. GW and Laura stole the march on them, and this an attempt by them to save face and steal the credit.

They are selfish bunch and women is the cover. They do not care and never have for women. I can't believe they still exist.

It was Bubba's momma and some man who ran off, who gave us Clinton.

More to the point, women did not give us Clinton. Big money lobbiests from liberal corporations like Tyson Foods, Disney, AOL/Time Warner, etc. bought the votes at the DEM fundraisers. Not to mention the China connection. It's the money not the women.

There are many women who have been brain-washed to think abortion is a woman's right. These women go to the voting booth with one thing on their mind, and trust me there are alot of them. Very sad. And as a woman and can somewhat understand what TLBSHOW is saying. Being a conservative woman, I will never shut up :-)

You know what happened the last time the Afghans had a government shoved down their throat. They staged a 6 year guerilla war. I want all our boys out when they finish the mission our president assigned them. I couldn't give a hoot whether Burhkas will be required dress after we leave. It's really none of our business. Making crap like this our business causes terrorism.

What's objectionable is NOW implying Laura Bush was merely following their lead on the issue. As NOW is irrelevant, essentially, I doubt that she was waiting for their guidance.

Gracious, smart, strong, beautiful feminine women like Laura are anathema to the women(?) in NOW. I'm sure it makes them feel better to claim that she was merely following their lead as she made history in her radio address. They've got to know that they are completely irrelevant, and are trying desperately to make themselves feel important.

They did give us Warren G. Harding, the 2nd most corrupt president. Yeah and the #1 most corrupt president too. The one who could feel their pain ("put some ice on that").

TLBSHOW doesn't have a high opinion of women in general. I think this dislike of his must stem from a deficiency in his...well, his anatomy.

NOW no longer exists. How could they. I never heard them say a word about Bill clinton's denegration of women, therefore they must not exist otherwise I would have heard about them screaming for his resignation. Maybe your talking about a group like NOW that only cares about keeping abortion before and after birth available to women. I'm pretty sure they only care about death issues not women's issues.

"World leaders must bring women to the table in reconstructing the Afghan government and must make women's rights a priority," Gandy said.

This is absolutely false. These great defenders of diversity are not pleased when they see a society that doesn't glorify radical feminism, which is every bit as intellectually loathsome as fanatic Islam. We are not fighting this war to make Kabul safe for Gloria Steinem. We are out to destroy the al Qaeda, remove the Taliban, and ensure terrorists can never again use Afghan territory to plan, practice, and carry out their atrocities. Maybe Tony Blair and other European and UN socialists wish to make this their agenda. The US is waging a war on terrorism, not trying to get The Vagina Monologues on the Kabul theater-in-the-round circuit.

Kudos! I seriously thought you had lost your mind.
