Activists Use Internet, E-mail to Advocate for Afghan Women's Rights

NOW Responds to Laura Bush Radio Address

November 17, 2001

"The U.S. and allies abroad would do well to follow the lead of feminist groups, echoed in this morning's statement by First Lady Laura Bush, and ensure that Afghan women's rights are restored in the post-Taliban era, " said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Kim Gandy. "In fact, thousands of cyber-activists have been bombarding the Administration with demands that women be included in rebuilding an Afghan democracy."

"World leaders must bring women to the table in reconstructing the Afghan government and must make women's rights a priority," Gandy said. "NOW's e-mail action alerts and online letters make it easy for activists to get this message to U.S. government leaders."

Last month NOW launched an internet and e-mail campaign urging U.S. lawmakers and government officials to insist that women's human and democratic rights be protected against the warlords vying for post-Taliban control of Afghanistan. The e-messages also demand that Afghan women leaders be sought out and included in reconstructing the country's government. By logging on to NOW's website, www.now.org, activists can send messages to President Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Sen. Joseph Biden and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

"Prior to the Taliban's 1996 takeover, Afghan women were scientists, professors, members of parliament and cabinet members and university professors. They led corporations, non-profit organizations and local communities," Gandy said. "Clearly, there are many Afghan women well-equipped to participate in leading Afghanistan back to full democracy. And in under sixty seconds, anyone can send a message to decision-makers demanding that these women leaders be at the table to help rebuild and lead their country."

"U.S. officials must listen to the diverse cross-section of cyber-activists from across the country and beyond," Gandy said. "What they're saying is that warlords cannot be allowed to divide the spoils and shatter this opportunity for an Afghan government that includes women as full and equal human beings. Women must be an equal partners in post-Taliban Afghanistan."

Interesting... NOW stands up for Afghan women but were nowhere on Gennifer Flowers, Juanita B??, Kathleen Wiley, et al.

A pretty woman needs no speacial rights, only the homely.

I think NOW and women in general should just shut up[original TLBSHOW quote]

I think TLBSHOW is just frustrated because it was women who gave us Clinton, and women, generally, who tend to vote with the parasite community to give us liberals and socialist Democrats. That's all.

I dare you both to say the same thing about blacks or Jews, right here and now. The same demographics hold in voting, so show a little courage and follow through with the thought. Let's see how tough you really are. Then you'd be banned from FR and rightly so. Stereotyping is for pinheads, easy because you don't have to think.

By the way, what is this "show" stuff? You do shows? Like ballet or a game show or something?

Nothing is wrong with that. NOW was opposed to "violence" and that violence begets more violence and how wrong we were to bomb Afghanistan. Now NOW wants a voice at the table when what they opposed freed the women they say they were protecting… As usual, they skip over that part…

From what I've been seeing of Afghanistan lately, I don't see an environment where the above could exist. Sand, sand and more sand, houses built of stone by hand and very limited automobile traffic. Perhaps what I have been seeing has only been photos taken out in the suburbs....

This in no way implies that the Afghani women have not been victimized but camel dealerships and very, very, very used truck sales seem to be the only businesses worthy of "corporate" status.....

Since the September 11th attacks the National Organization For Women has, yet, to come out and support the military action that is taking place in Afghanistan. [snip]

Excellent post Joe! I'v been thinking the past couple of days about starting an opinion thread about this very subject. With a title something like Where are you NOW?! Been feeling under the weather so haven't gotten around to it. Thanks for your post, it was just what I wanted to say! :-)

yep...big mistake to let us vote. You better go to the Whitehouse and ask Bush about grassroots republican women and the part we played in putting him into that House!

WWW.democrats.org maybe a place to find something. Nothing yet on Laura's speech, but I did find this little gem:

Our Party's Mission

Our mission is simple: We want an America that gives all Americans the chance to live out their dreams and achieve their God-given potential. We want an America that is still the world's strongest force for peace and freedom. And we want an America that is coming together around our enduring values, instead of drifting apart. Democrats are determined to renew America's most basic bargain: Opportunity to every American, and responsibility from every American. And Democrats are determined to reawaken the great sense of American community.

feminist groups, echoed in this morning's statement by First Lady Laura Bush

Presumptious cows. Like they have the clinch on humanitarian ideologies. That's a slap in Mrs. Bush's face.

It really was a slap to L. Bush. 'echoed' their postion! ha! They speak as if Laura Bush doesn't have an original thought of her own outside of what they have already spoken.

I tend to agree with you--though there is no going back and with the conditions things are now, I wouldn't want to go back to women not voting. Men aren't the kind of men they used to be. Neither are women. I suspect we all have swallowed a bit of NOW's lesser radical values. Some more than others some like it or not. NOW may not be very influential presently but we are currently living in a world shaped by their warped influences from the past.

Maybe we got 'em running SCARED, Box! Republicans are encroaching on some pet concepts of the left-- good concepts in and of themselves, but flagrantly usurped to massage some dykes' superiority complexes...

Omigawsh! Hmmmmm... Them intolerant anachronistic right-wing clodhoppers have got to have some evil purpose at hand... There's no way they could possibly be enlightened enough to come up with this stuff otherwise...

/sarcasm

And they think that even if conservatives do start acting on these pet concepts, it's all because of precedence set by the left... The left is setting the bar... No way this is due to folks acting out of sheer sense of decency...

Sorry, I can't make myself listen or read anything those "NAGS" say. These are a bunch of women who had very unhappy pasts regarding men or fathers. They want to rule but don't have the brains. Everything they say and do is hyprocritical and self-serving. They are a joke.

Bite your tongue...or is that fingers? There are a LOT of women who do NOT think NOW and Hillary in any way represent women. In fact, my first reaction to this letter was, "how dare these Nazis try to align themselves with the first lady!" Laura Bush is a far better representative of women than Hitlery, Ireland, or any of those losers.

Remember those images we used to see a lot, before they no doubt became politically incorrect, of a guy with the devil talking in one ear and an angel talking in the other? Think of that scene with a woman, with Hillary on one side and Laura on the other....I will leave to your imagination which represents which. The situation for women in this country is about that bizarre....AND that simple.
