Will it be Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara? The dying young woman who claims love "means never having to say you're sorry'? Or the star-crossed Italian lovers from Verona?

The search for America's 100 greatest love movies was launched on Wednesday by the American Film Institute (AFI) as part of series celebrating 100 years of cinema.

The AFI sent out ballots to 1,800 actors, screenwriters, critics and historians for its "100 Years...100 passions" feature, linked to a CBS television special to be aired in June 2002.

The event follows searches over the last four years by the AFI for the top movies of the past century, the most beloved stars, the best comedies, and the scariest thrillers.

AFI director Jean Picker Firstenberg said the theme of romance was chosen for the cinema centennial series before the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

But she added "As we move forward we are now -- more than ever-- reminded that the movies tell stories that move us and bring us together; and though the lovers on screen may end up apart when the lights come up, we, the movie lovers, remain bound by their emotional journey."

Jurors are asked to choose their top 100 romantic movies from a list of 400 provided by the AFI and return their ballots by December 14.

I know she is the enemy but I am suprised noone mentioned A Star Is Born with BS and Kristoferson.

My girlfriend at the time made me take her. I didnt want to go but I left the movie wanting what they had.I also still love the song evergreen.I think the sound track had a lot to do with the movie being great.

The other one I liked I saw with someone special as well and it was Crazy from the Heart? I think.The last song at the end was Love me tender and my girlfriend made me sing it to her.I didnt do so good but I practiced and someday might use it.

I did a quick scan of every post and did not see:
City of Angels
Somersby, or
Romancing the Stone
I know, the actors are political wrong headed, but I absolutely love City of Angels, I've seen Romancing the Stone about a hundred times, and Somersby, though not quite a true love story, struck a chord.

I think Shakespeare in Love is a perfect reflection of Shakespeare's own style and something the bard would have greately appreciated.

Though, already mentioned, Casa Blanca is my favorite, "Play it, play it, Sam. If she can stand it so can I."

Yeah, the first time I saw it, it was with people who had seen it so they pointed it out. She had seen so much death, she appreciated life so much more and was ready to accept dying. Great movie.

No the lead actress was Kristine (?) Lattee (sp). She is a tall, beautiful brunette. And a liberal, of course. The lead actor was hespanic I believe but can't for the life of me remember his name. He was about her height. She was a school principal and he was the school janitor. They run off to Mexico and end up married and the story is great before and after the Mexico fling. Sooo cute!

215 posts, and nobody has mentioned "Always" yet??? How could you Freepers not mention this wonderful movie!!?!?!!?

I've seen it at least 3-4 times ,and each time I watch it I become dehydrated from the several pints of water lost from crying--LOL. I practically need a canteen to get through the final scenes.

"Always" (a remake of "A Guy Named Joe") is all about true love, love that surpasses death, and loving someone enough to let them go. (Oops, don't get me started--I'm starting to feel weepy just talking about it.....LOL)
