Yanks barely repelled attack
By AP
WASHINGTON -- A group of U.S. commandos assigned to call in protective airstrikes for Afghan rebels came under heavy fire and were almost overrun by Taliban troops, according to the first eyewitness accounts from Americans in northern Afghanistan.
Airstrikes beat back the offensive, and the Americans carried out their mission to ensure the anti-Taliban fighters "did not suffer a defeat," the report of the firefight said.
U.S. special forces also report fighting alongside rebels armed with about 10 rounds of ammunition each and nourished with "little water and less food," carrying out assaults on horseback against heavy Taliban forces.
Deputy Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz read the dispatches from U.S. officers in northern Afghanistan during a speech released yesterday.
In a report Saturday, a soldier said airstrikes from U.S. warplanes saved the Americans and rebels as they came under fire.
"As you know, a (U.S. element) was nearly overrun four days ago and continued to call close air support and ensured (anti-Taliban) forces did not suffer a defeat," the report stated.

It's amazing what you can accomplish with a couple of guys on horseback, and the formidable arsenal of the United States Air Force.
These brave soldiers are fighting like hell, and I hope the liberal press starts to report a little more on the fighting men who are risking their lives.
Notice the misleading headline they use in this story.

I sincerely hope that this garbled sentence isn't suggesting that our forces have only 10 rounds of ammunition.
