Can't speak for Packard Bell ,but older Compaqs were extremely un-upgradeable. My old presario maxed out at 48megs of ram and wouldn't handle more than 8 gigs of hard drive due to Compaq's funky phoenix bios (amongst other things)
As far as the bessemer converter,kind of hard to get in the back yard but the old barbecue and liquid oxygen trick should make for an entertaining upgrade experience
